both the dell and the HP are great deals on great monitors but the lack of a HDMI input really annoys me, i often hook up my console to a monitor.

my current ASUS mons have both HDMI and composit in, they just happen to be TN pannels

IPS panels are great for gaming, whatchu talkin' 'bout?

With a HDMI-DVI adapter though, you aren't having audio carried to your TV.

I guess these two aren't? I've been reading reviews and non of them say these are any good for gaming.

They have greater response time, but it is OK unless you are into competitive gaming or play twitch based games.

^the ZR24w's an 8-bit S-IPS. I'd definitely buy it over this. Great Deal!

There were some reviews where the dell had slightly lower input lag than the HP. Ignoring the rebate lets assume they are equal priced (close enough). The HP is by far the better choice for photo work. For gaming... dunno, they could be roughly equal. For power use the Dell is much better due to the LED back light (which also gives it better blacks). What put me on to the Dell was the 3 year advanced RMA warranty. With HP getting out of the hardware business I have no idea what is going to happen with their warranty, though currently they claim they will honor them.

I'm even thinking about ordering a 3rd Dell if/when they go back on sale for $299-329 range.

Better deal how? Not disagreeing but would be helpful if you actually provided some useful info.

Well, I clicked the OP's link and the 2412m is $350 now, so $320<$350. As far as the actual monitors, they seem to be pretty even overall to me honestly, so the hp is a better deal imho.

Yeah but that 320 is AR. Also, with any monitor deal you should look at the dead pixel policy. IIRC, Dell's is pretty good and I don't know about Macmall.

Also if anyone cares the Dell is MUCH thinner. This is important to me since my desk isnt too deep

question - so despite the fact that this new Dell U2412M only has a 6-bit E-IPS (and not an 8-bit S-IPS panel), is an E-IPS panel still going to blow the pants off of a TN panel (LED back-lit or not) when it comes to color, picture, and contrast quality? i ask b/c my main concerns are those features, as opposed to features like response time.

TIA,
Eric

I'm by no means an expert but my dell U2211h (also an E-IPS 6 bit panel) looks far better than my 3 TN panels in terms of color. Brightness is another thing entirely as one of my TN's has an LED backlight and is quite bright.

I have an NEC EA231WMi e-IPS display, which I assumed was 8-bit, but I looked it up, and it appears that it might actually be a 6-bit + A-FRC. Even so, it is much better to use than all of the TN displays I have. I prefer my MVA Soyo display overall, but a 6-bit e-IPS display is still great, especially when it comes to contrast.

thanks for the responses...i probably wouldn't pull the trigger on a Dell 6-bit E-IPS display when the HP 8-bit S-IPS can be had for marginally more. on a different note, i've been considering the older Soyo 24" display. while i know it is neither S-IPS or E-IPS, people seem to like the S-PVA panel as much as any 6-bit E-IPS, and every now and then i see one for a steal of a deal in the FS/FT forum.

I ordered one yesterday (9-6) from Dell SB, was 339. Had a 15% coupon but it wouldn't give me sale price and coupon at the same time.

As a SOYO owner, I have to say I really like it (better than my NEC e-IPS). The only problem is that while the panel is amazing, the rest of the electronics are not that great. I've been lucky - I use mine everyday for work, and its held out for many years now. I've read about others whose power supply has died, though. If that happens to mine, I will not hesitate to try and fix it, but just something to be leery about. ALso, be careful that you are getting the MVA display - Soyo switched to using a TN display at some point.
