Delta 38CFM fan mod question

Somewhere I saw a message concerning modding the Delta screamer so it drew pawer straight from the power supply instead of the motherboard header. Unfortunately, I cannot locate the information again. Can someone point me in the right direction? From what I've read, this modification is recommended due to the power draw of the fan.

Is it as simple as soldering a molex connector to the fan leads, or is there a hybrid approach that still allows the motherboard to monitor the fan's RPM?

Yes, you have to solder the wires to a 4-pin molex connector. If you use a 4-pin connector, you cannot monitor the fan's RPM AFAIK.

Can I take the third wire and attach it to the mobo header, or does it also have to actually draw power from the mobo header as well in order to measure RPM?

I have blue wire (Sometimes Yellow) Going to the Motherboard header and the red and black going to the 12v Power cable directly fromthe power supply. This works well so I can monitor the fan speed.

Same here, my Delta gets power directly from the power supply while having the RPM sensor wire going to the motherboard header. This works rather well as my Abit mobo will shut down if the fan stops (or there's no fan connected to that fan header).

ABIT mobo's can handle the Delta plugged into the fan header. So can ASUS... My delta is plugged into my mobo and its never had a problem.

thx, i think i'll try that, i just have use a 4pin conector right now, never thought i could do that hehe
