On the one hand, something is clearly needed which "refreshes" the platform. On the other hand, you don't want to freak people out by changing everything. The OP's article seems to say that they are leaning to the latter. I guess we'll see. At the bare minimum, I hope they can get the weather app's temperature to show the real temperature.

I will say that the new Yahoo Weather app for iOS is very flat (all info in one screen.. which is "flat" to me but maybe I'm not using the term correctly) and it looks awesome.

I immediately deleted the iOS weather app and move the new Yahoo Weather one in it's place and I never miss the old one. If the new interface looks anything like the redesigned Yahoo Weather app, then I'm all excited... and come to think of it, the new Yahoo Weather app does look a bit like Window's Metro... sort of.

Off topic a little bit, but that Yahoo weather app is off the chain! It doesn't have as much info S WeatherBug has, but it gives me like 80% of what I want and looks 1000x better. I love the images it pulls for locations and stuff too.

So the "big change" I have to look forward to in iOS7 is how everything looks? Give me a break. They can keep the same look just give me some more functionality. I'm sure there are some new features, but that article spent about 90% of the time talking about what essentially seem to be graphics changes.

Well I got an iPad 4 from the wife for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. It's a great device and I'm enjoying it for the most part. That said, it is lacking quite a bit in the UI/functionality department vs. my Galaxy Nexus. It's a big sad actually. I want to love everything about it, but the UI feels so dated. I really hope iOS 7 is a big leap forward but have a feeling they are hyping up small changes that really won't do much. Fingers crossed though.

there will definitely be people who wont like this changes. basically theyre going to make it more androidy in appearance, and some people, like my mom, like all that warm and fuzzy stuff that iphone has

While it's not popular among many tech geeks, I've seen the same from people who like the skeuomorphism on iOS. I'm wondering if Apple could try to appease both camps by releasing different themes--like one to match existing iOS, a flat one, a light one, a dark one, etc. They could still implement any needed adjustments to core apps/functionality and everything would still work the same for all iOS users, but with different skins applied. I know one of Apple's goals is to make sure all users have a similar experience and I don't see skins getting in the way of that.

iPad 3 here, i don't use it. wife uses it with her iPhone, she's already on a Note 3 bandwagon.

I really want iOS to freshen up the UI and have sharing intents. On my nexus devices, pictures or videos to different apps is godly.

Who has a feeling this redesign is going to fall flat, just like their new Maps app did last year?

Why are you so focused on Apple failing? It's like every year is a fail for you if it's not a go big event. Would you say Android 4.2 is a fail too? It barely brought anything new, and introduced quite a few bugs which aren't fixed today yet.

I have an Ipad3 (a gift) and a Note 2 and I don't really see either platforms as missing anything. I love both of the devices.

Well yeah. I don't have high hopes for iOS 7 because it seems like a pretty big task to open up the OS to add a whole different homescreen perspective. I suspect it will come slowly. Like how slowly we've gotten a better keyboard on stock Android.

iOS is getting long in the tooth. As far as functionality, the app support has always and continues to be a primary reason to own an iPad or iPhone. Android has gotten much better but iOS is still the go to device for educational apps for my kids. And the general apps that I use, the iOS variants always seem a little more polished than those on Android. I find myself not using my Nexus 7 as much as I thought I would.

I'm probably the only one that couldn't care less what the friggin home screen looks like. I need to see some major changes or the groundwork for it.

If iOS 7 gave me a central document center accessible by any app, a "trusted application" platform where more thoroughly tested apps could be chosen as system defaults and quick reply for SMS, I wouldn't give a shit if it looked EXACTLY like iOS 6 otherwise.

I'm sure reality will be somewhere in the middle.

The only feature I really would be ecstatic about is a lock time out, but I'm not holding my breath. I should be able to select a lock time-out period for when I manually lock the phone. It's a slight trade-off between security and the annoyance of constantly having to enter my pass code. Anybody who's had a conversation with a slow texter will understand what I'm saying. It's the limbo between leaving your screen on, and turning your screen off because your wasting battery waiting for the response, only to have the text come in 10 seconds after. If I could select i.e. a 5 minute lock time-out this would not be an issue. The lock time-out should not work together with the screen time-out though, only with manual locking.

A finger print sensor would be the best solution of course, but for older devices this would be the only way.

Anyways, here's to hope.

Settings > General > Passcode Lock > Require Passcode

That doesn't work for you? It defaults to immediately, I believe, but should be changeable to 1m, 5m, 15m, 1h or 4h. If you don't have those options, then are you attached to an Exchange server? If so, then the EAS Policy has been set to limit you from changing it.

Really!

Yes more is always better for the most part, but i fail to see how IOS is not functional enough.

Well then I guess pretty new graphics counts a major overhaul for you then. You will be quite satisfied with the new "upgrade" I imagine.

There can be more features sure, but it's not like iOS is not functional enough.

Not being able to set default apps is dumb. Having to jump through hoops just to play non-mp4 videos is dumb. Having to wait annually to get major features and updates is dumb.

Obviously if you choose weaknesses in iOS to highlight it can be dumb. It's not like Android doesn't have weaknesses that are just flat out dumb too. What's your point? That by highlighting weaknesses it means the OS is non functional?

I'm not saying either OS is perfect. They all have room to grow.

Android needs polish in areas. iOS has more polish but it's lacking in actual features that Android does have, polished or no.
