It puzzles me why neither Google or Apple came out with both, a free ad-supported method (iTunes Radio), and a paid subscription option (All Access).

The settings noticeably improved from what iOS had before, but I would still like to be able to change what's there by default.

Seeing that wallpaper covered with a grid of icons is just annoying to me. They moved one step in the right direction but there's a lot of work left to do.

well it's also free on mobile. so not really a competitor to spotify/all access

And Pandora has been free on mobile for years. The only thing you're getting is a "buy from iTunes" button rather than a "buy from Amazon" button.

Sooo...

I've seen enough here that I'll most likely stick with iOS for the next year. There is some great foundation work, IMO, and a seemingly willingness to start opening more things up. I'm looking forward to iOS 8 at least.

I think the design is fantastic and a cut above anything else in the market. However, not sure why you got any sense there is a willingness to open things up or that a foundation is in place - I didn't get that sense in the slightest.

It's now a prettier/slicker walled garden.

Well, yeah. Worlds smallest smartphone screen. Why not use one hand?

Perfect example of this forum right here. Does android come with a default app on how to be a complete douchebag?

That pretty much sums it up.

I'm liking the way it's shaping up. I like the look, an update was long long overdue. The overall look is OK, have to wait and see how it is in hand before making any real opinion on that. Key Chain has me very excited. 1password is great but this level of integration will rock. Radio looks to be better than the competitors from what I've seen so far. Better multitasking, lock screen and notifications. I'm sold, can't wait for it to come out.

You can look at a couple of things. The first is the admission that the mobile market has changed and Apple needs to change with it. Other than that, I'm looking at little things like an applications ability to open up when a notification is received so that when you check it the app is running. Or variable length on the background task time depending on your usage of the app. Just some small things that make me a little more optimistic towards iOS 8. I just needed to see some movement in that direction.

It's now a prettier/slicker walled garden.
It will ALWAYS be a walled garden. That's what separates iOS from Android. Apple believes iOS users want a curated experience. You don't have to look any further than Tim's comments at D11.

Tim Cook: On the general topic of opening up APIs, I think you’ll see us open up more in the future, but not to the degree that we put the customer at risk of having a bad experience. So there’s always a fine line to walk there, or maybe not so fine. We think the customer pays us to make choices on their behalf. I’ve see some of these settings screens, and I don’t think that’s what customers want. Do some want it? Yes. But you’ll see us open up more.

Ewww, the new UI and backgrounds are way too colorful. There better be a way to set it all to black or some dark solid color.

Yeah, it kind of looks like someone took a rainbow sherbet crap on the screen and then ate a bunch of mushrooms to make all the colors run together.

It puzzles me why neither Google or Apple came out with both, a free ad-supported method (iTunes Radio), and a paid subscription option (All Access).

My guess is that the music companies want too much money with it and are a pain in the ass to deal with when negotiating.

Wow... the new "control center" looks like something right out of Android 4. Hurrah for innovation!

I think the colors are from the dialog translucency and the background image they selected.

Yeah, they basically stole from Android, WebOS, and Windows Phone and Apple users are praising Apple for 'innovation'.

Stop trolling. There's more than just toggles. Let's not forget Android 4.2 was released with them being just shortcuts. It took the 4.2.2 update to make them actual toggles.

So it would be more accurate to say that they stole it from Samsung then? :sneaky:

Well, I imagine that their (Apple's) position is that if the wireless and BT radios consume little enough power, then why not just leave them on all the time (I do). I'm not saying that they're right, but it's sort of the same argument as why you close the lid on a laptop rather than fully power it down, the negative battery impact from standby is so minimal that having to cold boot it every time would be a greater inconvenience than any small amount of use time that you may lose out on.

That's a weak counter. Has nothing to do with power. And the fact that Control Center now exists (thankfully) means they also knew it was an important addition.

Overall I like this redesign a great deal. Icon refresh was long overdue. It should happen every four years.

Android fanboys have an unholy obsession with Apple. Its downright pathetic. The usual suspects in here stinking it up with nothing better to do. Just like clockwork.

First person to post about Android in this thread since the keynote was...

Drumroll please...

Nah, I'll let you guess.
