It's amusing that most of the haters probably have never even done more than had a layover in DTW. But then again, it's easy to believe everything you read & hear, isn't it?

Reasons I love Detroit:

Its history is extremely complex & interesting. Therefore there is a lot of culture to be found in the city - from Mexicantown to Greektown to Araburb (Dearborn) - not to mention it's 85% African American. Of course, that means there are lots of great places to eat great food (TasteFest is unbelievable)! The Detroit Institute of Art is on par with the best art museums of other big cities, & the C-Pop Art Gallery is likewise very cool. The Detroit Public Library is enormous, not to mention pretty well-run. The Detroit Science Center is not bad at all, the Zoo is great, the Holocaust Museum is sobering, & Greenfield Village is a really interesting place to visit. There are now also plenty of casinos.

Musically, Detroit was the epicenter of soul & funk (Motown - the Motown Museum is incredibly fun to visit, George Clinton, etc.), and is still the epicenter of American electronic music. Motor (legendary electronic music nightclub in Hamtramck) closed down a few years ago, but places like Foran's & Oslo, and the Paxahau crew, have been doing a great job of keeping electronic music alive in the D. The Shiny Shirt crowd even has their own nightclubs like Bleu. And let's not forget Detroit's role in rock n roll, from acid to punk. Those of you who say there's nothing to do in Detroit must not be looking very hard when it comes to nightlife. In terms of major festivals, there are the Electronic Music Fest, the International Jazz Fest, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (there are only 16 full-time, professional orchestras in the country) - there's also an Opera House. And pretty much every medium/big name musician/entertainer stops in Detroit when they tour.

Detroit has professional baseball, hockey, football, basketball (men's & women's) - the Tigers no longer suck, the Wings always do well, and the Pistons have been doing just fine the past few years.

People in Detroit know how to drive & the city is easy to get around in. None of the roads in Michigan are great - the weather doesn't help us with that - and Detroit is heavily traveled, especially by heavy trucks that tear up the roads.

Detroit is not unsafe. I spent plenty of time walking around in some slightly sketchy places at late hours of the night and never once felt unsafe. I've never even had my car broken into - maybe because I keep valuables hidden (a good idea in any big city).

BTW: Dubb's analysis of the city's financial plight is about as spot on as you can get without reading a multiple hundred page book, or taking the history of Detroit course @ UMich, EMU or WSU.

Yay! someone who gets it!

One thing I'll add because I know there's lots of car buffs here:

the skillman branch of the detroit public library (near compuware) has an automotive archive people travel from all over the world to access. repair manuals, artwork, models, everything dating back to the dawn of the car era. interesting if you're into that sort of history/memorabilia and such.

I'm currently at Kettering University in Flint, and I would never walk anywhere at night here unless I was in a big group of people (5+). Earlier this term a group of pre-teen (10-12 years old...) kids beat up a guy (probably drunk, not a student) and left him in the middle of the road. This was at ~11pm and right next to the school.

This city is farked up!

I'm probably about a mile away from kettering tops. over on sunset ave. by mott golf course.

nice post but the Tigers still suck, lol.

Sports are a huge part of Detroit. Michigan has been atop ESPN's top sports areas many times. It's not Detroit, but nearby college towns are rampant with die hard sports alums. The Pistons are set to be contenders for a while. The Wings are back and kicking butt again. The Lions....well....they're not the WORST team, i guess. but the Lions have a huge following. If the Lions ever get good, football fever will be insane around here.

i agree about if you complain there's nothing to do, you're not looking hard enough or you're not open to seeing/doing new things.

He also had people "assisting" senior citizens in retirement homes by giving them pre-filled ballots, for him, of course.

EDIT: On the plus side, the Rochester Hills road millage was voted down. 2.5 mills! That would have been almost $500 more a year in taxes for us.

I've since learned that that is a very narrow and ignorant view of the city. there's so many great places and opportunities you just don't see unless you really start looking. it's kinda like a city hiding in plain sight.

I like the idea of detroit as a city that doesn't need density.

I like seeing the things that the residents have done to create their own environments when everyone else bailed for the burbs and basically told detroit to go fsk itself. (heidlberg project, hammtramack disneyland, UA theater windows, wayne state, cass tech)

I think someone needs to shoot Ilitch. that man alone has done detroit more harm than any other single person.

I think detroit needs to annex the burbs. (NY did it with great results, detroit was unable to and has stagated with the 8mile divide.)

I think it's a raw deal that detroit is 9th in terms of vehicle vandilism rates, yet has the highest insurence rates in the country (it's image is far worse than it really is)

it is NOT the highest crime rate in the country. I've spent plenty of time walking around downtown at 2am with $10,000 worth of recording gear on my back, and never once felt unsafe. For many people I have met, I think they feel unsafe because there's so few white people compared to what they're used to. (detroit is 85% black)

oh, and for you kid rock/eminem arsewipes:

MC5
iggy & the stooges
electronic music (most of it)
motown
john lee hooker

...just to name a few...

then detroit is like philly jr.

Oh yeah, Ilitch is the problem, not Kwame, or Archer, or Coleman Young.

The high insurance rates are to counteract the fact that no one has insurance. 50% of all cars driving in Detroit are driving without insurance.

The dirty claws of Detroit will continue to spread outwards, as it has for the past 40 years, pushing the average person even further outwards.

as you say from your nice home in rochester hills...

I get the feeling that is the case...

As I said, detroit is not without its problems, it's obvious that detroit has more that most major cities. There are lots of things to improve. the politicians are a big part of that. sitting on your heinie and looking down your nose at detroit isn't helping any.

I say ilitch is the big criminal becase of what he's let happen to the physical city. do have any idea how much property he owns that he doesn't use, and doesn't protect? he lets them sit, wasting away, waiting for the day he can get out of paying taxes on them, then get the city tear the buildings down for him. detroit looks as wasted as it does in significant part because of ilitch.

Proof?
on second thought... ilitch isn't the problem. your attitude is the problem. which is one of the reasons I say annex the burbs - to make people realize they have a vested interest in the city they happily exploited and forgot about.

I love how you make it sound as if Detroit have been a victim of the suburbs. Detroit was a victim of it's own citizens, the same ones who still live there today. The "race" riots of 1967 weren't race riots, it was a chance for poor people to loot and blame it on racism.

Oh, don't worry, I don't blame you. I live in Flint. I plan on leaving as soon as a frickin' can. I'm just saying your view might be a little skewed.

I went to school in Flint. Kettering University.

When? and did you stay around there, or did you venture in to the east side and the north side?

Flint, in a lot of ways is microcosm of detriot, and genesee county a microcosm of the detriot metro area. We even had our own corrupt mayor, that we replaced with a used car sales man that tried to buy my dog off of me. (True story. We live in the same neighborhood. He also drives around in a buick with cop car decals).

why the hell do you keep saying "detriot" ? is it some slang term for "detroit" ?

We all know what we don't like about Detroit, crime and poverty over vast spans of the city. All phases of city government from police to the mayor's office can be scarry to deal with.

Things I like: downtown, greektown, mexicantown, eastern market

and it's where I work.

With all the construction the roads won't be that bad in the future.

QFT - the one thing that scares me is driving over there. the interstates are frickin' insane. way worse than driving in the Greater Toronto area imho, which is also pretty congested. the traffic around D-town is scary. scary cars & scary dudes sometimes.

BWAH!! This amuses me greatly. Having driven rush hour in Detroit for years, I can attest, speed limits are a suggestion and one that's universally ignored. Police don't pull anyone over unless there's 3 cars for backup and...yeah. That being said, I have very little problems driving in other places due to the trial by fire of growing up here. Which by the way? Is what I dislike about Detroit. LET.ME.OUT.
