What's with all the Michigan and Detroit talk, heh. I know of two people that have gotten their cars stolen in the last 2 months...and I still like the city. I'll be downtown Friday night for some sushi and a DJ

Eh I'll be downtown tomorrow morning for working at Detroit Receiving Hospital....another part of Detroit that I didnt see mentioned is the Detroit Medical Center, great set of hospitals! I'm slightly bias cuz I work there, but considering Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center see approximately 350,000 people on average coming through our doors I'd say we serve fairly useful purpose to the city

On the other hand I'm sad that Kwame Crookpatrick was reelected, especially since I'm what they call a non-voting taxpayer.

I love Detroit tho, never thought of it as scary or a problem, i mean there are some parts of town that I might not wanna be out late at night, but downtown is fine! And yea some of the highways can get a little wild....696 and the Lodge come to mind....our version of the autobahn I do believe.

on the election, yeah, I'm disappointed. I had hopes that hendrix could make some headway. it seemed appropriate, a new mayor just as the last of the statler was turned to rubble. times changing and all that.

I agree that kwame's "come from behind" win seems a bit suspect.

but- there are some interesting things happening, regardless of the city government. I just hope the superbowl isn't a total disaster.

I couldn't pass up this thread as I have so many memories of Detroit. First the bad.

When I arrived one Fall day in Detroit it was like going into a warzone. Gigantic abandoned factories lined the interstate on my drive in standing as testament to a once great city. Burned out buildings blanketed several neighborhoods. I wondered why they had so many burned buildings until Halloween rolled around and the city set fire to 1000+ houses for fun, it was called Devil's night in Detroit. Detroit's Mayor Young was on 60 minutes and being grilled for corruption and the craptasticness of his city. He had more hidden accounts in the Caymans than all the Caymans put together. He eloquently defended himself and his city by dropping the F-bomb several times.

I heard the most horrific crimes imaginable broadcast on the news every week. And just some crazy stories, it seems crack dealers have a fetish for exotic pets because every other week they were finding a lion, tiger, or bear in some drug bust. Alot of people just didn't give a crap about anything but where they were going to get their next 40ozer. Holidays like July 4th were a reason to pull out your Gat and empty it skyward, inevitably some little kid died every year from the stray bullets.

Detroit was highly racist during this time. If you were white you were openly discriminated against, payback for those forefathers transgressions were neverending. We could get a cab but you would get charged double.

Now for the good. Detroit was getting much better when I left several years ago. Devil's night was completely wiped out due to neighborhoods organizing watches on Halloween and a little help from mother nature with rain on Halloween 2 or 3 years straight. Mayor Young was out and Mayor ARcher was in and he proceeded to clean up all the burned out shells of buildings and obtained Federal aid to help rebuild the city.

While crime was still a problem it seemed to be improving as the neighborhoods got cleaned up. A little civic pride goes a long way I guess. I also made friends with a couple of guys that were black, and we played basketball all summer long running the courts for hours at a time. Hmmm not every black person is a racist just like not every white person is a racist.

Redwings hockey, stanley cups, oh my. Detroit Pistons with Isaah Thomas & Bill "the winer " Lambeer oh my. Michigan trouncing the buckeyes If you love water Michigan is your place. Boating and parties all summer long on your choice of Lakes a short drive away. Biking along Lake St. Clair, Harsens Island, Sleeping Bear sand dunes unforgettable. Your choice of a bajillion different bands on any given night. Sloan perhaps the greatest thing Canada ever gave us besides Molsen Ice. Suburbs were nice and a trip up North was like going to a different world with the fence of towering trees lining the roads up.

I could go on and on about Detroit but I think you get the idea. It had a rough side but it also had many things that made it attractive. I hope Detroit is continuing to improve and wish all you wings fans the best.

larger tax base.................... the cobo hall expansion and people mover were paid by the tri county area on booze and smokes taxes. Gimme a damn. I used to go to Detroit all the time. Lilys in Hamtramack Took my to the Aquarium and the zoo, the great lakes museum. But the elected officials are corrupt and Detroit has not made strides in years. If I am wrong please tell me.

Kilpatrik how in the hell did that happen? I thought Freeman was a shoo-in. How can anyone 17 % down in the vote one week out come back and win. How about that elections clerk and all those dead people voting. lol

Detroit IS continuing to improve however the issue of corruption is still hovering around, especially this last election...something smells kinda fishy and it aint the Detroit River, I mean how do you have a 9 point lead less than a week before elections with 12 percent undecided and lose the election by 6 points....the math doesnt fit and yea...Kwame promising to be better this time around is a load of BS....so politically things arent getting that much better, the city is on the brink of state receivership again, so we'll see how it turns out but hopefully they can keep the progress moving forward. However it's a wait and see kinda game because the stigma is still bad around here and Kwame has done NOTHING to heal the rift between the burbs and the city....especially with his comments about the suburbs, west bloomfield specifically, having more of a drug problem in schools than detroit....that kinda crap wont help anything...

i remember hearing about that statement Kwame made about west bloomfield having more drugs that detroit schools. I was listening to gregg and michelle motorcity midday. Also wasnt Kwame trying to get oakland county to help pay for coba hall center? If he was doesnt help accusing an oakland county city of being a major drug school center.

what's this about the FBI investigating some of the absentee votes? Apparently some of the absentee boter ballots were from... DEAD people... :Q

I don't know why you want to pay the already ridiculous taxes in the first place. You should move to Sterling Heights!

Freeman is demanding a recount. It should cost the city around $600,000 for the recount.. I'm sure Kwame will blame the deficit on this. Its just a drop in the bucket compared to the money Kwame wastes. But we all know Kwame would have demanded the recount immediately if he lost.

from everything i've heard and experienced, the super bowl was a hit. people from out of town were praising the city and had great things to say about the people here.

I flew to Detriot 16 months ago for a wedding.

The Suburbs were OK.
The roads sucked.
The other drivers were asshats.
Parts of Downtown looked like a warzone.

Overall I was not impressed. If this is the "improved" Detroit, I don't want to see what it was like before.

New York City is much better place to visit.
