hmm...this game is pretty easy on normal difficulty so far. I've done everything by stealth/non-lethal methods, and i don't even really have any stealth augs. The hardest part is figuring out the enemy's movement patterns. then exploit that and take him down while the other guy isn't looking.
most of my attacks have been non-lethal takedowns.
Nik mentioned their loading screens were lightning fast...you must have a much better PC than me.
Loading seems to be hit and miss for me. There's like a 50/50 split where half the time it's fast (~10 seconds) and the other half it's slow as shit, around a minute. And we're talking the exact same location FROM the exact same location, so the stuff should be buffered already.
I've noticed this because I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and my 'perfectionist' killings require mucho reloado.
It has a hidden ending at the end of the credits... incase u missed it.
^ this was most definitely started by squaresoft and final fantasy....
them and their stupid lets make the people watch THOUGH the credits for a special ending routine..
Just finished the bar tab quest and i paid off the bartender 5000 credits to leave the girl alone. the quest was "completed" at this point. but then as soon as i take down the bartender and take back my 5000 credits my quest gets updated as failed. is there a consequence to this? should i just let him keep my 5000 credits?
Heh. Y'all ATers have been been mad at it, I see.. I've been yakking about the game mostly over at the main Eidos forums but also over at TTLG.
I'm... quite well impressed with HR, overall. I've played through the first 2 DX games ad nauseum, and this one mostly lives up. I'm on my 3rd playthrough. The boss fights are steaming piles of non-sequiturish shit, though. I've figured out how to beat them easily enough, but the point remains that I have to meta-game just for their sake. That fucking sucks.
I wish there had been more development of certain characters and concepts.
I wish that Eliza could have taken more of a role as a helpful rogue AI like Daedalus. The Hyron core with its REALLY freaky drones could have had more exposition. Everybody saw the drone suit in Zhao's crib, but all there was besides that, previous to Panchaea itself, were a scant handful of emails that many players might have missed, since they were all on hackable terminals.
All in all, the game was a bit ham-handed in rewarding a stealthy, exploratory, non-lethal approach. Rewarding one approach over the other is not really what the first game set out to achieve, so on that front, the game is lacking. XP gains from hacking (once you know a pass/code) and creeping through vents (once you've infiltrated the destination room) ought to be nixed. It's just too easy to turn HR into an XP farming meta-game due to these elements.
I'm about half way into the 2nd chapter and I'm pretty disappointed with the game. I know that this is more like a stealth shooter, but it's I really don't like the way the weapons feel. The controls feel unresponsive to me--Adam won't auto-reload when out of ammo. Instead, when you're ready to fire you realize that you had no ammo left. I killed a bouncer in the Hive and then went into a vent. When I came out, the body was lying there and it was as if nothing had happened. The boss fights are appauling. I finished the first chapter on hard until I came to the boss. Without too much ammo, I died like 30 times before finally giving up and beating him on the easiest difficulty.
The story hasn't been very immersive for me. So far it seems generic--someone tried to kill you. Find out who and why. Then they make you run around from one person to the next for information. I also didn't like the dialogue system. Some of the responses of NPCs didn't feel like they were even connected to what I said.
That mission in the first chapter where you had to convince the police officer who you had betrayed to let you in. He told me that I had betrayed him. I said it's all in the past. He said oh really? Thank you. You can go.
I thought the stories in Mass Effect (1st one and parts of the 2nd) and the Witcher 2 were awesome. I really felt like I was the character. Adam Jensen doesn't really feel like someone I can empathize with. The game just doesn't feel as epic as those two.
The visuals are also dated and that's something everyone can agree on (I'm playing on PC with everything @ high). Does anyone else think this game is overrated? I haven't played the first 2 Deus Ex games (because for some reason, I can't get into dated 3D visuals) so maybe that has something to do with it?

They released the preorder bonuses as DLC. Not complaining too much. About to finish my second play through, so if I decide for a third, I'll pick up the $4 DLC with the extra mission and grenade launcher.
played for a few hours a buddies house on the weekend and have a few questions before purchasing this one for myself.
1. How do you earn xp in a non stealth playthrough?
The game was marketed in that you can complete it differnt ways, which is good. But any way i try and do it other than stealth yields lower xp, by a large margin. I tried shooting people from the shadows, without alarming anyone, from up close, from far away and nothing gave as much xp as stealth. Im thinking im somehow missing the "run n gun" attribute/skill/aug or something that makes playing as a shooter somehow worth it.
2. Graphics look dated, is there a high res texture pack out yet? some rooms look so bad i got flashbacks to half life.
3. where can i get a hack to disable the adds? and why is load time all over the map? sometimes it takes 5 seconds sometimes it takes over a min for the same section to load.

1) There really doesn't seem to be many augs for non-stealth gameplay- recoil and armor augs is about it.
2) Graphics look nice and fine to me.
3) you mean the tiny little ads that you see in load screens occasionally? It really bothers you that much? I saw the ad one day and haven't seen another since then.
4) can you explain?
I'm about to finish up in Hong Kong (I think) and I'm having a blast playing it.

1) thats dissapointing, so really there is not multiple ways to play you pretty much have to treat it as a thief game?
2) most are ok, its not a great looking game its 2-3 years behind in graphics but it seems like they totally missed some textures and left them really low res for no reason, every now and again you will come into a room or whatever envororment and see one or two really bad textures that look like they are from the year 2000.
3) yes the loading adds, which wouldnt be an issue if they would fix load times but with load times getting to be 1 min plus on some sections the adds are annoying. They obviously need to improve there loading times as sometimes they take less than 10 seconds then you will reload a save and the SAME loading screen will take a min or more.
4) I mean when i can kill a boss with fewer shots from a stun gun than a real gun i think the balance is off. But this just confirms point number 1 about how they are full of shit on the whole you can play anyway you want marketing, what they really mean is this is a stealth game only and we will gimp you if you try and play it any other way.
I think my main issue was i bought into the marketing and was looking forward to a more run and gun deus ex game. This is actually why i try and avoid marketing at all costs. I realize you can play this as run and gun but when you realize that by doing so you get gimped guns and exp its just not the same as if this was a true dual playstyle game.
I never thought of it that way, and havent really played enough yet to make a final decision on if im going to purchase it. Im going to try and hit up my buddy for a few more hours of gameplay and then decide if i want to drop $40 on it, or if its a wait till on sale sort of purchase.
I think I probably played the game like most people. I tried to be stealthy when I could, but I would switch to lethal weapons if I was bored or tired of spending a ton of time sneaking. Outside of the boss fights, which were pretty tough, I never felt like my lethal weapons were underpowered. I could take down any bad guys with a headshot from a laser sighted gun, or I could run and gun and take them down with a few body shots.
Well i bit the bullet and bought it and both DLC's. Got about 20 hours into it right now split between 2 playthroughs. One playthough is going completly stealth with points spent on hacking/stealth/cloaking. The other is complete run and gun with points spent on the dermal armor/inventory space/jump distance/arm strength.
So far its been alot of fun for both playthroughs but its been much more fun doing the run and gun one, i just wish the exp wasnt so messed up, my stealth character has 46% more experiance than my run and gunner and i just got to that asian city with both characters. Im considering using the console to award my run n gun guy a few points to spend on upgrades as i consider it a serious balance issue in a game marketed for multiple play styles.
Amazingly the only boss i fought so far was much easier to kill with my stealth guy. I just kept hitting him with the stung gun once, switching to machine pistol and unloading a clip into his head and repeating till he dropped dead(took maybe 5-6 stuns and clips from machine pistol) killed him on only my second try. Took me over 15 tries with my run and gun guy cause the bad guy kept rushing me and i couldnt put enough rounds into him before he got to me, i had no way to stun him and it seems a few clips from a combat rifle to the head is not enough to kill him. Another balance issue IMO.
Its kinda annoying because my run n gun guy is so much more fun to play but it feels like the game is fighting me and trying to force me into a stealth role.

I'm a "power leveler" as they called it back in the day, so never had trouble with either my stealth character or gun-centric dude. The stealth guy definately has more experience since you get x5 (50) the experience for taking a guy down with non-lethal, hand to hand compared to just shooting him in the body.
However, I hacked EVERYTHING and got practically every node with additional experience with my run and gun guy, so it evened it out slightly. On the other hand, I didn't know hacking had additional experience in nodes until 1/3 of the way through the game with my stealth character, but for both characters, I got all the useful augs by the time I got to the last level; not to mention a shit ton of money.
