I've worked with hundreds of the ugly puke yellow craptastic DFI mobos of yore. Featureless, failure prone, low budget are words that come to mind. A step below ECS, good for crappy white boxes with durons or celerons in them.

Then, one day about a year ago, BAM! They sell some riced out board with a fancy box. Oh No, I think, you can't fool me with an ugly color scheme and a fancy name. Lan Party... ooooh it's a party.

But now, people still drool over this ugly step sister. Could I be wrong? Is it a new DFI?

Seriously, who has the scoop? I don't doubt that a company that is famous for cheap crap can start making a decent product if they want to, but how did their image change so fast in peoples minds?

I'm aware of one thing, about a year ago Oskar Wu, the genius behind the original ABIT mobos left ABIT and went to DFI.

Since then, working for DFI he's changed the way they produce motherboards. Everything about them. From the caps to the BIOS.

Hell, he even codes most of the BIOS himself.

Because of this, well, because of him, DFI has become just about the best overclocking board out there.

As for reliability, time will tell.

They appear to be making quite a move up though, nobody can keep their new SLI board in stock.

Frankly, I get the same feeling about the new DFI boards as I did about the ABIT BP6 a great many years ago.

Thanks, that explains a lot of it. I think that also might explain how Abit has stumbled recently.

I've used DFI boards for over 15 years and had little problem. Still have a 14 year old 386 running.

I know the original LanParty Pro875 was OEM'ed for them by a 3rd party manufacturer. I found a Russian-language review of an i875 board that had a 100% identical layout to the LanParty Pro875, down to the onboard power and reset buttons and LED's.

Combine with that pretty crappy overclocking perfomance that my Pro875 exhibited, the lack of BIOS updates for older series of motherboards, and the multiple hardware revisions needed to get things "right," and you have a fairly unhappy customer. Add to that a REALLY annoying 10+ second bootup delay when onboard SATA was enabled but no drives were connected, A CONDITION THAT PERSISTED EVEN IN THE PRO875B SERIES (I tested a latest-revision Pro875B a year later), which neither Abit nor Asus boards of the same generation suffer (No SATA connected means the board just skips over the port, without taking 10 seconds to probe it) and it makes me very much not a DFI fan.

I expect cheap motherboards to be OEM'ed by 3rd tier manufacturers, and suffer from problems such as slow hardware detection. I lump DFI right there with the UltraX power supplies - lots of bling, but not a lot of bang.

/me pets his puke-yellow P4C800-E.

Forgive me, but somehow, I doubt that. Even the old Abit didn't do that. They still license the core BIOS code from Award or AMI and OEM-customize it.

As for DFI.. well, they've been around a while, and even their old boards weren't what I would call "bad". Definately not PCChips-bad.

Dude, let me tell you, the first DFI mobo I used was about 3 years ago.. they wever NEVER a step below ECS.. that board still runs rock solid to the day and has never ever caused any problems. I have few recent experiences with DFI but all have been positive... ECS on the other hand.. 1 experience, 1 major hassle and failure... junk.

DFI is great.

I really doubt that,.... DFI is the OEM supplier for many mainstream computers, (Intel, Compaq, and HP to name a few)... have been for 25 years or so.
