Is there something I'm missing?

I am running a RTX 3070 and my monitor is 1440p 144Hz.

Settings are on "high" with nvidia DLSS "on" and at "balanced" setting.

My FPS are only around 111 on average. Changing everything to "medium" or "ultra" doesn't really affect FPS at all. I even tried dropping everything to "low" and still FPS doesn't go up.

You'd think I'm CPU limited but both the GPU and CPU are only utilized around 62-67% or so...

What's going on here?

You may ask, well 111fps is good.. what do you expect? I expect a rock stable, solid 144 fps, that's what. This is Diablo 4, not Cyberpunk 2077 or Modern Warfare 2.

No profanity in the tech forums.

From the sounds of it, you are about right where you should be, but if turning down settings doesn't net you higher FPS, then this could be an issue with game optimization or just a CPU bottleneck at that those settings.

Also, according to the article, do note that blizzard recommends 32GB of RAM for higher settings.

you are aware that only half your threads are real cores.
So if your system is using about 50-60% its pushing its real cores and not hyper threaded cores.

So id say you are CPU limited.

Holy!! I thought 16 was pushing it, but I really just need to upgrade beyond my 8 gb

For most gaming machines I'd go with system ram 32GB of ram these days. Even at 1080p medium or high settings, D4 in the betas was using just over 7GB of ram on my 4790k system. When running high settings with the 4k texture bug in the first two betas, it was using 21GB of ram.

that for 4k and ultra. I'm at 1440p

so that leaves the CPU. Apparently, a 10th gen i5 is no longer cutting it. I will just lock my FPS @ 60 and be happy with what I got...

Why would you lock in at 60fps, when you were getting 111fps? I've been playing this on my steamdeck, but maybe I shouldn't...

Yes, the 32GB is recommended for 4k Ultra, but only 60FPS. Also, the next level down, the high settings recommendation, is for 1080p high, still only 60FPS as a target. Your 1440p at high settings are higher than this, between the two recommended levels, and you are expecting more FPS than 60. While the bottleneck is likely not just the RAM, it would probably be a good idea to have a bit more than 16GB for AAA games at your expected settings and resolution.

As for frame limiting, I wouldn't lock at 60 FPS, but you could try 120 FPS as a ceiling and see if that gives you a smoother experience at least. Or 90 or 100 or something.

I don't have much to add but just to share that I have a vanilla rtx 2070 with a really old i7-3770 (lmao) with 16gigs of ram.

It runs D4 maxed out at my also old 1080p monitor at 60 fps locked. Smooth as butter as far as 60fps goes.

FWIW, I have everything set to ultra, and am getting steady 165 fps (monitor limit) at 1440p. I’ve limited frame rate to 144, though, to reduce the amount of heat generated.

I run the game at 4K 120Hz all settings maxed out HD pack etc. The game + windows uses 17.4GB of system memory, currently.

Wow, I didn't even know they sold a series lower than 60. I did a quick look up of 3050 v 2070. 2070 wins by +40%.

That's insane to market something in a higher gen that performs several notches below the vanilla 70s of the last gen.

Well, there's a new generation of cores, more cores, more blah blah. and a series with super rtx, wow. it's a pity that rtx is only in name here...

Just got my old new never built fx8320 cross hair v formula e with 16gb 1866 ram and a GTX 780 running win11 pro going last night and the game ran as smooth if not smoother than my son's ps4 which is running 1080p. Mine is 3440*1440p.

While I personally wouldn't run Windows 11 until there was a good reason for me, like WIndows 10 is EOL or they add some really cool new features that are useful to me, I definitely appreciate someone who takes the time to get it working on an older computer. This is good news to me, as you have proved again that people can get Windows 11 running on just about any hardware, despite what MS may say.

My main reason for it was I am used to it from my ryzen 3200g laptop, and also DX12 benefitting the Vishera cpu better.

Still have to over clock tho and tune. But I currently need to catch up and complete campaign.

Still I am pleasantly surprised that it is running so well on this hardware. I think the nvidia driver may be legacy at this point. Had to deinstall GFE tho. It wouldn't let me install the driver package without it.

But it is running at minimum as smooth as my son's ps4 is running it. I have had some very minor hitches in the cut scenes is all. I mean like something like a half second hitch.

If you are used to it that is fair. Though for DX12, Windows 10 also has that. Unless you meant to say that the Laptop performed better in Windows 11 for another reason?

i lob my complaints in - can't tell if it's my computer, or server side, but i get stutters/lags reminiscent of diablo2. the game will just freeze for 2-6 seconds, while continuing gameplay. so if i'm unlucky, i die. barring those freezes, gameplay is plenty smooth. but it can be REALLY annoying. any way to diagnose?

I forgot about that actually. But yes I am used to w11 because of the laptop. I have been wo a desktop since my slapped together at the last minute for D3 launch died. Died about 3rd season or so after necromancer released.

Plus I had bought all this stuff in the way back machine and it's what was supposed to run Diablo 3. So I finally finished it 10 years late, but finished. PSU died during the time, my guess is sitting for so long and then powered up and blew on an alderlake build my nephew was trying to get going. I felty bad for him but knew better than to loan my stuff out. Replaced it with a Seasonic TX1000, old one was a Seasonic platinum x 1000 (warranty expired)

Also I need to read up on MSI afterburner use for OC gpu. So far all I have done with it is reset settings to default.

I have a 3 maybe 4 day weekend to play with proper tuning due to wife and son and most of the others on the compound going to MI for a funeral service leaving tomorrow, I will be staying home with my granddaughters and have until sometime Sunday evening to try and dial in some things. Might take Monday off also if guy comes to fix our central AC.

Going to check your sig brb with edit.

What are system specs? ISP and service tier?

Dell G5515
Ryzen7 5800H
32gb RAM
Nvidia 3060m 6gb
D4 is installed to an SSD
network checking in at 500/30 and an 8ms ping to speedtest.net's nearest server

running at 4k with most settings on medium, and 50% resolution scaling (should i just set it to 1920x1080 in that case?)

the fps counter consistently shows 60, but then when i get the stutter obviously it drops.

there are also brief periods where the game won't accept any input from my controller (yeah, D4 does play nice on a controller)

Hmm that is a tough one kinda. My guess is it is just some general game stutter, could be either CPU or GPU. Or possibly even related to world loading, if you are going between zones or something.

Most of them are related to the games assets using increasing VRAM as you navigate the game, the more areas you visit the more it tries to populate in VRAM. I'd suggest trying lowering Textures/Resolution until it stops.

Part of it definitely seems to be vram related, as dropping down to 1080p helped a good bit. The major stutters (completely freezing) have gone away.

BUT there are still points where there is no input response. Like I'll be mashing a button, the game shows my skill being activated, but nothing happens for a few seconds. Apparently this is not uncommon. The "button delay" bug
