What phones did you trade to AT&T? 99.99% of the time, you're getting ripped off by trading to the big guys.

Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. They're old, and are only valued $100 because of the promo

Nokia N80 (~6-years old?) to HTC

Dell Streak (~3-years old), Motorola Droid Pro (~2.5-years old), and Nokia E75 (~4-years old) to AT&T

All of them are pure profit for $100. Nobody would probably want the Nokias even if I give them out for free. The Droid Pro I could probably get up to $80, but not more.

The Dell Streak is the only one that's a little iffy. The value is about $100 on eBay with good condition (and mine looks pretty damn good considering its age), but I have hacked the back (literally cutting the back plate under the battery open) to replace the internal sdcard when it died last year. This defect plus the hassle of trying to sell it, I'd take $100 trade-in any day.

Here's a nice picture I took of them before I traded them in. They obviously still worked perfectly as I was still using two of them until the day I traded them in.

Nice. Probably the first time I've ever seen trade in actually work in favor of the customer.

Yeah, I got really lucky. Right at the time I was looking for a new phone and I was really liking the One (but probably wouldn't get it because of the price, as I'm on prepaid) and suddenly found Deeko posted this thread

I just unlocked, rooted, switched S-OFF, and flashed recovery (CWM) and TrickDroid 8.0 yesterday on my One. My first time messing around with any of the hacking options on Android. It was a lot easier and smoother process than I expected, taking less than 2 hours while I was working on other stuff. I would have done it sooner, but I do like having my phone "just work" since it would suck to not have a working phone if I even temporarily screwed something up for just a few hours. Luckily I have a spare smartphone now just in case.

I like TrickDroid a lot, it's basically a "choose what features you want from Sense/stock" ROM. I got rid of all the carrier apps and kept most of the Sense stuff except the lockscreen. The root-only apps/features are the reason I decided to root, there just seems to be so much more you can do in the way of file and network management, maintaining backups, and managing battery life. The speed is pretty much the same, though: fast and smooth as ever. Which is what a lot of people have said about GPe vs Sense 5 on the One, but now I've confirmed it for myself.

I ran Helium to backup all my apps and I'm going to try flashing MoDaCo.SWITCH now, which has dual boot of Sense and GPe. It seems like a good way to try out GPe on the fly without sacrificing anything, assuming it's stable.

Nice to hear it's so easy on this model, and that development is going quickly.

So, I'm thinking about getting one but HTC seems to be going down the tubes. If they do, if they go bankrupt or something similar, how will roots do and/or function? Anyone got any guesses?

It's being sold on Play store. I think you can feel confident in at least 2 years of support. In the AT's preview of Moto X, Brian mentions that 4.3 is in the pipe for HTC One. That should be good enough for 2 years as well.

I would be more concerned of hardware than software if I were to get the One.

HTC typically only puts out a single OS update for their phones. And most Ones are still running 4.1.2, with 4.2.2 slowly being pushed out. Any potential 4.3 update is so far off into the future that by the time it does get released, most One owners will have upgraded 2 or 3 times.

That's also on my mind, but if I'm looking at 2 years or so on contract, there are always things that are added in newer versions that you can't predict but should have. And security matters too, for example.
Still, I guess rooting will work as a solution since the One has sold reasonably well.

When it comes to hardware, that's fairly pointless to worry about since things move so fast all the time. Every flagship phone is "old" within 6 months. I could get an S800 phone in a few months and it would be crushed within the next year, especially if you look in the GPU area where are looking at major, major improvements.

And then there's the no microSD slot, no changable battery issue.

But other phones have major issues too. The main worry is the long-term support.

Still, I re-iterate my question, if HTC as a company goes bankrupt in, say, a year, how will rooting do? Will it continue to function (assuming that the rooting community for the phone is there and wants to continue). Im assuming that it would (if the rooting community was interested in the phone post-bankruptcy of HTC)?

Ask the teams/individuals making the custom ROMs on the XDA forums. I'm sure they could give you an answer.

I think enough people have the HTC One and appreciate the device that it will be community hacked for a while.

Got it, too, just a couple of minutes ago. I figured I wasn't getting the code at this point. Funny that it took that long just to let us know that we have to wait.

Oh well, under the promo I technically don't qualify since I ordered before the promo period, so this is just an extra for me.

I got that email too. Pretty much wrote it off as never getting it.

Seems like Developer Edition will get 4.3 instead of 4.2.2 -- wonder if that will ring true for carrier phones?

I can almost believe the Dev Edition will get 4.3, but HTC has already started deploying the 4.2.2 update. The Verizon version will launch with 4.2.2, then the rest of the US models will get 4.2.2. And thats it for the carrier versions. Its rare for HTC to do more than 1 major OS update.

This statement is specifically for HTC phones that are branded by US carriers, right?

^That's kind of a shame really. I think the phone is overrated, but it seems to be alot better than other what HTC put out before it, and it is still a good phone overall.

I suppose that people are more trusting of brands like Samsung, and Moto over HTC. And I suppose that main positive attributes of the HTC appeal toward the iPhone crowd, but the iPhone crowd just aren't interested in Android phones.

With Samsung locking bootloaders on AT&T and on Verizon.. I think you're going to see a reverse trend pretty soon.
