Did I fry my mobo?

Okay, at home I have an eMachine. I know, stop booing. Anyway, I was upgrading the processor from a Celeron 366 to a 633. I put the new one in and tried to start the machine. It stayed on for about three seconds, then shut itself off. I tried it about three more times, then took out the new chip and put the old one back in. When I try to start it up now, it seems to start up, but the monitor never comes on, and the lights on my keyboard (num lock, caps lock, etc.) don't light up either. A friend told me that I may have fried my motherboard. Does this sound right to anyone else? I'm wondering what to do next. Thanks for any advice.

Doesn't sound good, see if there is a jumper to reset the mobo, maybe its clock settings are messed up. Also try rmoving everthing but mem, vid card, and old proc. Re-seat parts too. All longshots, but you never know.

Stupid emachines jumpers are all software-detected. There are NO manual jumpers on this board. THanks for the other suggestions, though. I will try them out.

if all else fails pull the CMOS battery for a while(incase you don't know, it looks like an over-sized watch battery) it'll reset the bios to default

Sounds like you were trying to replace a PPGA Celeron 366 (.25 micron) with a new FCPGA Celeron 633 (.18 micron).

This is a No No for any motherboards that cannot support the newer FCPGA chip. This e-machines C366 was most definitely only designed for the older PPGA Celerons. The CII FCPGA chip will actually fit in the old PPGA socket, but will not work (as you now know). My guess is you may have caused damage to either the motherboard or bios settings by inserting the incorrect type of chip in the socket. Like the nice people said above, you might want to try removing the BIOS battery for a couple hours, and then put it and the old chip back in. If it doesn't work after that, then you may have caused permanent damage to your motherboard. If so, you're SOL. Anyways, Good luck to you!

Well, I'm not sure exactly what it was, but thank you SO much for the advice, guys. I took all components off the motherboard, then took out the battery. When I put everything back together, it worked!!! Thanks again for the advice. I think I'm still going to get a new motherboard for that chip, but it's nice to have a working computer at home again!

Xander,

Most excellent! I know that feeling of relief to have your system working again. I guess the new chip really did confuse the BIOS of your e-machines (Since the Bios wasn't designed for the new Celeron)

A new motherboard definitely sounds like a great idea. Not sure if e-machines uses proprietary cases and motherboards though. If they do, then you'll have to go get your self a new case along with that new motherboard. But that's the fun of it......making your very own computer. Good luck to you!
