Ok so i know everyone says LCD is better, but i have a 22'' mitsubishi monitor (like 4 years old or something) and it's still working really well but I do hear people saying how LCDs are better and whatnot. I will be getting a highend x2 system in about a month. I just wanted to know if someone can tell me or direct me with a link to a good resource that talks about the real world differences. If i would upgrade it would be either to 2405 or the other 20 inch dell or viewsonic(19'' i think)

Basically i'm trying to ask if the price i would pay is justified by the difference i would see

LCDs generally look cooler, are thiner, and weigh less. CRTs are bulkier, weigh a ton, look boxy. Any change in picture quality depends on your GPU and the monitor's ports.

crts have better color unless you go all out and get a real nice apple or dell lcd. it all depends...crts are STILL better for gaming though.

how are crts better than lcd for gaming?

Today, most LCD can compete directly with any crt, gaming used to be only for CRT but now, response times are lower, which eliminates ghosting. Prices are dropping and technology is advancing every month or two.

Anyways, IMO, the best thing about any LCD is that they do not hurt your eyes and no radiation.

Personally, I like my 17" Samsung 710n more than my flat 19" NEC CRT.

Having your eyes not hurt after a long gaming session is nice.

It really depends on the person when it comes to displays, so you might want to go try to look at the displays in action at a store.

LCDs use native resolutions as well. If the game doesn't support the resolution, you'll have to have black bars on the sides from your fixed aspect ratio setting, or the picture will be ugly.

"generally" i find crt's to be alot sharper, and if image quality and ESPECIALLY COLOR is of any sorta concern to you then throw lcd's out....i work as a digital imager for a professional photography studio, the photography world shuns lcds at current time for the items i listed above ^^^ but if your not doing any serious imaging and color doesnt matter to you then save yourself some deskspace :/

I'd keep the CRT, especially a large high res one like yours. I just picked up a 21" Trinitron CRT a couple months ago and I wouldn't trade it for an LCD that wasn't equal to or better than a 23" Apple Cinema display.

Best resolution on a lcd monitor that I've been able to find is 1280. Haven't found anything better. Go with a 2048 CRT. LCD's can't touch that res.

Everytime a new thread about this topic comes out people come posting with tons of misinformation like "LCD's are easier on the eyes" lol. Do a search this has been covered many times with very in-depth info. But if you want the quick bottom line then -> CRT's are superior to LCD. Take it from a videophile, hardcore gamer.

My main appeal of LCDs are the fact that it doesn't strain your eyes... seeing as how i'm going to be a dentist... i need my eyes ... so my next question is if the native res is 1280 ... and say i want to play bf2 at 2048 (just an example) would that be ok?

I think this is more of a personal preference than anything else.

People can tell you statistics and response times all day, but if something looks better to you, then go with that technology.

Go to a store and use some LCDs and CRTs on display and see what you like/dislike about them.

Personally I generally get a strange feeling / eye strain when watching LCDs for a length of time. It bothers me when people post stuff like "LCDs are easier on your eyes" and such when I know it can vary from person to person.

Try different technologies out before you buy.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think native res on an LCD is the max you'll be able to play anything at.

You can go lower, but that's not really a good idea either as native res is what's going to look best.

Flexable resolutions is a very nice feature of CRTs.

The 2405 you're considering would certainly give you a nice native res to work with though.

IT is no longer a fair compairison these days to go into a store and compaire 15 differant makes of LCD's to the one extremely low-end CRT they have on display . One large (Will go unnamed) retailer picks a CRT model to sell that has focus and convergence problems (my 10 year old 27 in CRT TV had a better picture)and they are doing this on purpose in order to make more $$$$. A medium quality CRT will beat any LCD.

Tough for me to explain but I hope you get my drift.

I understand. I haven't gone monitor shopping in a while, but last time I did they still had decent CRTs on display at the time (Samsung, NEC, etc)

Wrong...ghosting is still prevelant with all lcds. There is no lcd that is superior to crt for gaming.

IMO
