In short. Trance is melodic (usually building towards a climax). Techno is harder (darker sound).

True techno seemed to originate out of the Detroit area in the mid 90's. As someone else said, Techno is more of a term now than a type of electronic music. It seems that people who don't listen to electronic music like to use that term to describe all electronic music.

I'd pretty much go with Booter & yoda's definition, but it should be noted that the line between techno and trance is not always clear. Trance encompasses a wide variety of sounds, and some of its subgenres have very little of the classic trance-type melodies to it, while others feature certain techno-type beats. It's always tough to definitively categorize music by genres.

Seems to me techno is a good word to describe all electronic music, in the same way rock can be used to describe hard rock, metal, punk, etc.

techno has a much harder/raw sound, you'll pretty much never hear vocals in techno

trance is well, trancey lol, it's pussy music =P



techno = crystal method, chemical brothers

trance = dirty vegas, atb

Yup, the prior definitions... are pretty good. Paul Oakenfold is trance... Dirty Vegas is almost ambient.
A lot of people like to use techno as a generic term... I actually do too, but I guess electronica would also be another good term. I usually like to use subgenre classification like ambient, psychedelic, hard house, big breaks/beats, drum & bass, trip hop, etc...

dude yes they are. dirty vegas and atb are trance just like alice deejay, PvD, dj jean (old), timo maas are trance.

Sure they might be overplayed commercialized trance, but it's trance nonetheless.
