I plan to take my girlfriend to see Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theater on the 26th, and wanted to know if someone can recommend a descent priced restaurant to go before-hand.

I found a place called "21" but they require a jacket/tie. I only plan to wear a tie.

Any suggestions?

John's Pizzeria is directly across the street. I've been to that location once or twice, and their UES location a few times. The pizza is very good, and their prices (at least at the UES one) are actually pretty cheap.

21 club is super expensive. and it's difficult to get a table without a reservation.

in that area are:

ollie's - chinese
ruby foo's - sushi/chinese fusion
carmine's - family style italian
virgil's - bbq (messy but yummy)
wu liang ye - chinese

these run the gamut of cheap to not too cheap and very casual to smart casual. there are others though. what is your budget and what type of cuisine/setting are you looking for?

My wife and I went to John's when we were in NYC last year. I highly recommend it. It's not a fancy place, but the pizza is fantastic and it's in a very cool old church building. Give yourself plenty of time though. I'm pretty sure they don't take reservations and we had to wait almost an hour for a table. Seriously though, the first thing I thought when I took a bite was "THIS is what pizza should taste like".

We went to Ruby Foo's also. It's definitely not a typical chinese place. They have some very interesting food. I don't remember what we had. I just remember that we liked some of the dishes, but weren't crazy about others.

I'm not a fan of Ruby Foo's. It was too touristy for me and the prices are much too high for unspectacular food. Asia De Cuba is a trendy and is somewhat pricey, but their food is unique and have sharing portions. Definitely ask the waiter for recommendations and let him know you're trying to catch a show. For cheaper Asian food, there is Hakata (Japanese), Aoki (Japanese), Saigon 48 (Vietnamese) and PongSri (Thai) all on a single block on 48th St. For Italian, I like Carmine's.

google Restaurant Row. It is a whole block of restaurants dedicated to turning dinner service around in time for the shows.... There is sure to be one serving decent food of a cuisine you like.

Also, citysearch is a great nyc restaurant resource.

And to the Carmine's recommendation above. It's a GREAT restaurant, but family style is best enjoyed with a group rather than just two people...

I happened to see this thread a couple days ago. The wife and I are spending the day today in NYC and I'm posting this from john's. The place is pretty nice and I'm just waiting on the pizza. Nice recomendation! Thanks

Edit: well the pizza was a little dry but the price was pretty good at $35 for a small pie, salad and a pitcher of soda for 2 people. I've had better pizza but for manhattan it wasn't bad and the décor was cool.

There is just a million places in manhattan to eat... IMO you should specify what you expect out of the restaurant. What type of cuisine, atmosphere, price, etc.

I eat out probably 5-6 times a week. Mood and scene greatly influence what you want to eat and experience. Maybe coming a theatre night for Phantom of the Opera would be cause to put on a jacket and tie and go to a place 21 (which is decent IMO, kinda stuffy though, I generally like livelier hipper places).
