I work for DirecTV and talk to the customers a lot that switch from Dish. What I see is that most people prefer DirecTV. They offer more channels, more HD programming, and NFL Sunday Ticket. Also the equipment looks better. In Michigan, DirecTV installations are much nicer than Dish installations. I'm sure it differs in different states, different contractors and such.

Only contest is the NFL Sunday ticket. That's it. You can get all other major sports packages (plus regional sports stations) through Dish.

Direct has the NFL Sunday Ticket and uses XM for their music stations. They have less than 10 HD channels.

Dish does not do the NFL package and uses Sirius for their music. They have nearly 30 HD stations. They also have better equipment for the $$ IMHO.

I had Direct for years, switched to Dish. Happy so far.

so with either option, for just basic programming (no premium channels like HBO or Showtime), but HD channels, for 3 HDTVS's with one DVR, what would I be looking at?

I would guess $40 for programming, $10 mirror fee, plus $10 DVR fee? so throwing taxes and fees, about $75 a month? is that way off base??

for time warner right now, I am paying $45 for standard cable, $5 for HD STB, $10 HD DVR STB and $0 for cablecard. with HSI, my total check each month is $110...(I need to find another special - my last one ran out 2 months ago)...

Dish has more HD channels. Also, if you want International programming, then Dish has better selection.

I have DirecTV and am seriously considering a change to Dish.

DirecTV's HD selection and quality sucks ass and I don't give two sh!ts about football. In fact, it was their insane number of overpriced HD football channels that made them compress the HD movie channels so much they look like sh!t.

Not to mention Dish's HD DVR is better, and much cheaper.

I like dish...I looked at cable, direct prior to this...and Dish Top 150 or whatever it's called was the most bang for buck IMHO.

I don't care for NFL, although I like to play football at the beach despite being told I am going to hurt myself.

I don't have HDTV yet.

My PVR508 rocks though

I have dishnetwork top 120 plus local channels. I also have their dish dvr-625 reveciver. I like it

I just wish that dish network or direct tv would come out with receivers that used an ethernet port to keep the system updated instead of plain ol phone line connection.

DirecTV.

I've had both, several times. DirecTV's Tivo DVR unit blows away the Dish Network DVR.

Yes, that's what I'm basing it on, I don't care about anything else.

If Echostar has it's way, there won't be a difference between Dish Network and DirecTV.

It just comes down to whichever one has the channels and equipment you want right now. I've used both and like both equally. Echostar will buy DirecTV eventually.

Eh that's doubtful. I suppose it could happen someday but the last time Echostar tried that the FCC stepped in and said no. I guess it's a bit more possible now that the phone companies are getting into providing TV service and the last satellite competitor (Voom) died out because it was too much of a niche product. Guess time will tell but I doubt it'll happen anytime real soon.

Dish Network has been pretty good lately, i didn't used to like it too much.

Just kinda curious here, why does the NFL Sunday Ticket have such a big following? I enjoy football a lot too, but there's usually enough NFL games televised on Sunday on the norm channels, plus i have the NFL Network. Do people really need to watch more than 5 football games every weekend? How many games do you need to watch?

I just wish someone would offer a package that didn't have any news channels in it. There are about 20 channels that I ever watch on a regular basis but to get those 20, I have to get the 3rd or 4th highest package from any company because they aren't ever included together because they take them out to give me 10 different CNN, CNBC, etc channels that I will never watch.

As soon as some company comes out withan Ala Carte TV package, they will have subscribers through the roof. I don't know why it's so hard since it's the box that controls that part and they control the box from their system. Whether it's cable or satelite, either company could do it if they wanted to.
