I just heard that a bunch of Direct TV pirates just had their service disconnected, via some kind of sophisicated ECM method. I know a lot of people who paid good money for pirated/altered smart cards and now they're worthless.

Hah....good luck...the directTV kill last night wrote into the WriteOnce area in all those loop cards....those cards are hooped...a fix is in the work but its gonna take some time.

So long as there is a way for the legitimate decoders to decode the signal, there will always be an avenue for the pirates. Ahoy Matey!

I currently have Time Warner cable with RoadRunner installed. I figure for the $90 or so they get me for every month, I might as well get some friggin' movie channels included TW doesn't seem to agree

Any fix is gonna have to include counter measures to whatever Direct TV did. Otherwise, they are just gonna repeat that counter measure again. In the meantime many of the older smart cards have now been permanently hosed (they wrote to EEPROM 8000h-8003h which can not be repaired by conventional means) and since that model has been discontinued it seems to me that most pirates are out-of-luck.
