MS doesn't allow you to go back versions. If you want to go back to a previous version the safest way would probably to format/reinstall windows (and reinstall DirectX 7). You should be able to download DirectX 7 from most shareware sites such as www.download.com
My new HD couldn't have come at a better time. I was getting fed-up with the problems with DX8, and almost went ahead to format my old drive, but then my new HD appears. That said.. I stuck with DX7.
I think MS should consider dropping the backward compatibibly of the really early DirectX's (4 and under). The DirectX code gets more and more bloated every new version.
Do a google search on directx7 ...or check your games..alot of them have dx7 on them already. i have 3 games personally with dx7 on it and like 2 other misc stuff with it. i got my dx7 via a google search... dx8 sucked big time for me also.
