OOoohh! The software that manages the forum has been upgraded. Are those little icons on the top of the reply window something new or is it just that I've never noticed them before?

Before you jump, check out the Cnet reviews...LOTS of people complaining about paper jams
and/or crooked paper feeding. Also, toner cartridges don't last rated number
of pages.

Finally, this printer supposedly has no support for Windows NT or
(much bigger deal) Windows 2000. I'd never buy any peripheral
without Win2000 support, so check that first!

After reading these comments, it's Marty Robbins and El
Paso for me.

it does have support for Windows 2000.

you need to go to NEC website to download
the driver.

but it does have some problem with paper
feeding though.

sometimes several sheets of paper come out

The Brother HL-1240 would be an alternative. The advantages are speed (12ppm vs 8ppm according to the manufacturers), interface (both parallel and USB), Windows NT and 2K support, and cost of toner cartridges (about 1/3 less).

But the HL-1240 is about $260 shipped at Buy.com (after eBates and $30 coupon) vs about $125 for the NEC 870.

Actually, lots of people like this printer. I was trying to decide between thsi one and the Brother 1240 -- those are the two lasers available for under $250 these days. Both are fairly highyl rated.

At this price, you can't go wrong... I spent more than that on inkjet cartridges in a year, and laser is so much better.

I have the NEC 870 for 11 months and had the paper-handling problem maybe twice after ~6,000 pages. It sometimes makes a grinding noise when printing.

I too own this model and have had a paper jam maybe once. Granted, this is a home printer, so it is not getting that much use. And I have it running under WinME, Win98, Win2K (formerly NT4), and Linux Mandrake 7.1 (with graphics).

A hearty recommendation from me.

Oh yeah, if you just leave this item in your basket, you ***MIGHT*** get this price no matter when you buy. This happened to me about a month ago with some SmartMedia. The price was raised before I completed my order, but I had it in my basket with the lower price. Order went through with the lower price. Must be logged in to your account for this to work.

I've had this printer for about a year and it is great. PC Mag had it as the best printer of the year in 1998 (if you care about that sort of thing). Here is their review:

I have an Okidata Okipage 6w that I got a while ago for $180. I like it...it is no HP LaserJet 4 series, but it is decent. Just don't try to print graphics on it... The printer is still about $180 at Buy after coupons.

This NEC 870 deal completely rules though. If I didn't already have a relatively new laser, I would pick this up in no time.

I currently own a NEC 1260 (the big brother to the 870... this one prints 12ppm). After the trouble I had with NEC, I will never buy one of their products again. The printer does have problems with jams and worse when it spews paper out like crazy at times.

I purchased the printer less than a year ago from buy.com. The printer software (allowing you to change the DPI, power settings, watermarking, and much more) does not work under Win2k. Also, the 600dpi printer will only print in 300dpi under Win2k. NEC said they had no interst in supporting that printer under Win2k and offered to let me upgrade to another model for $600+. I would be hesitant about spending $200+ on a printer that may not may not be fully supported when the next OS comes out. I actually going to purchase the Brothers 1240 printer in the next week or two because of the trouble I had with NEC and their printers.
