Disabling Routers

I'm trying to diagnose a problem with my network and the only valid solution is that my ISP, RoadRunner, has banned router access. I've tried two seperate computers connected straight to the cable modem and they work. I've also tried two seperate routers, a Linksys and a Netgear, and they are both unable to resolve an IP address.

Is there a problem with the routers or is it RoadRunner isn't allowed router access?

Does roadrunner require a MAC address to be broadcast? Are your routers spoofing a mac address?

No

Everything's been working fine for atleast 3 months now. My wireless router is 3 months old and my Linksys is almost 2 years...

Well, it has something to do with the MAC address. Currently I'm using my Netgear router that has the auto-detect settings. The only way I can get it to get an IP from my ISP is if I use my MAC address. If I select Default, it will not work. That is totally strange because my ISP was never dependant on the MAC address.

Wow! You mean that people can change their mind, but an ISP is forbidden from any change.

Kevin,

Road runner has proably started binding MAC address. Try unpluging the power cord from the cable modem for 10 to 15 minutes to let Road Runners service time out and release the MAC address. Then turn on your router first then plug in the modem. Adelphia's Power Link Service works this way. You may get way with just turning the modem off but I have seen this not work at some customers sites.. Adelphia told me some of the modems have a "Wake on LAN" type feature and they need to be unpluged to release the MAC. Its kind of a pain to due every time you change hardware connected to the modem but it works.

I hope this helped
Robert

Jack I have not seen RR's service but I figured thats common practice among cable ISP's. I seen a MAC address held by Adelphia for almost an hour before it as released. I can't explain why there service didn't time out and release the address sooner. I only guessing he is having this type of problem.

I'm not going get in a pissing game with you, but I've had it as long, if not longer and I've had no problems since day one. I called RoadRunner to find out about their use of MAC addressed. The Tech told me that the only MAC that must be identified is the MAC of the cable modem. Everything else is set automatically. I don't know why the MAC of the routers stopped working all of a sudden but they told me they didn't change the system or anything.

I'm currently using a MAC from my laptops NIC via the Linksys MAC Clone and everything works. I don't know why it works that way but not the default way but atleast it works.

I'm not complaining about policy changes but it would be nice if they changed something to alert the end user. Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions...

Kevin,

Just trying to help. According to the people I spoke to at Adelphia they also binds the MAC address of what ever is attached to the cable modem. I don't know what RR does, just thought they might of changed to similar policy. When you find out what the problem was post the solution, I'd be curious to see what it is. Good Luck

Yeah, I know. Thats why I called RoadRunner to make sure they don't need the MAC of either one of the routers. They assured me the only MAC they care about is the modems. I even told him that some ISPs require the MAC of the Modem as well as the NICs connecting through if but he said there system can find it out for them. I kept refrasing the question and he kept repeating the MAC Modem so I said "Alright, thanks. Have a good one." Then I hung up.

I just thought it was odd that all of a sudden it stopped working but it all works now so whatever...
