Oh well,
Installed the Volcano 6Cu+ today on my overheating Athlon XP 2000+ and it didn't seem to make any difference at all to my CPU temperatures. It's still in the high 60s. I did notice one thing though. I installed the PC Probe software that came with the Asus board and it reports a high +12V reading (+13.xx) volts. How can this affect my PC? I'm going to get the power supply replaced tomorrow but can someone enlighten me to what damage this can cause?

Also I'm disappointed with AMD. It seems you always have to spend extra money to get your CPU to run cool. I've noticed that most of the overheating posts on these fora are about the AMDs. Darn...

What are your case temps? If those are high, the best heatsink in the world isn't going to help. What are your temps with your case open?

not really, you just picked the wrong one.

I'm just going to copy and paste from my other thread. volcanos are good for paperweights and D600s. (except for 7+, but that's loud as hell)

get GC68 - $6. works good. choose the no fan option (no fan means no ADDITIONAL fan so don't worry). cools my xp2100 very well and is uber quiet

peep my sig to see what it look like

CPU temps. seem to be higher with case open. I've got 2 suction type fans on the side of my case. My old P3 system doesn't have a single case fan but still runs at a constant 55-60 degrees C. And it has served me faithfully for 2 and a half years.

And as far as the GC68 goes... I live in India, and no vendor here has heard of it. If any of you decide to visit India, I'll buy that fan off you and take you out to dinner even, as long as you can make the damn CPU run cool.

...oh and what about the high voltage reading? (+13.xx on +12v?)

I have a question. Was your computer crashing or becoming unstable because of the high temperature? If so, then you should investigate all the cooling factors, not just the heatsink. For example, what is your case ventilation like? You say you have two "suction" fans? So both fans are exhausting air? Are these the only fans (besides the PSU) in your case? It would probably be better if you tried to equalize the intake and exhaust, by having one fan drawing air in, and another blowing air out. Also, what do you mean by the side of your case? Are the fans located on the side panel? You should really have an exhast fan positioned behind the CPU to quickly remove the hot air that is coming off the heatsink.

Also, what is the ambient temperature? I really dont know what the weather is like in India this time of year, so I cant guess. But if you can get the ambient down, then the CPU temp should drop correspondingly as well.

Is there some sort of thermal goop installed on the CPU? Or are you just using a thermal pad, or nothing at all?

Or, if you suffered from no instability problems, then there really isn't any reason to worry about the temps. AMD chips do run quite hot, but as long as its stable, I see no reason to try to make them run cooler.

I had a ASUS 7V333 with a xp2000 @ 1.67 and Volcano 9 full blast and PC Probe reported that I was running at the same temps as you. Used same setup in a MSI KT3 Ultra2 and the temps are around the normal 41-42C. Me thinks it is a ASUS thermal probe prob because the MSI board and extra thermal sensor I have installed concur with the Fuzzy Logic 4 readings.

Asus probe shows my 12V line as 13.84V. I don't believe it. Don't replace your power supply just for this reason... check the voltage in the BIOS and I think you'll see it is much closer to normal.
