Disney picks Blue-Ray

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 2004-- The Walt Disney Company (NYSEIS - News) and Buena Vista Home Entertainment (BVHE), its home video division, announced today their support of the Blu-ray Disc format. As part of its cooperation with Blu-ray, BVHE will begin releasing content non-exclusively in that format when Blu-ray hardware launches in the North America and Japan. The Company also announced that it will become a member of the Board of Directors of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).

Here is HD-DVD's latest move

Dual DVD, HD-DVD Disc Developed

New disc could ease the transition to the next-gen DVD standard, company says.

Memory-Tech will start mass production late next year of read-only discs that can contain data stored in both DVD and HD-DVDs (High Definition/High Density-DVDs) layers, a company executive says.

The new discs could help Hollywood studios and other content providers in their anticipated transition to the new HD-DVD format. HD-DVD is being developed to replace DVD for high-definition content.

The discs contain two layers, an upper DVD layer with a capacity of 4.7GB and a lower HD-DVD layer with a15GB capacity, says Masato Otsuka, general manager of Memory-Tech's engineering department.

I would prefer HD-DVD become the standard, especially because you know when Sony developes something (Blue-ray) there's gonna be a price premium. Beta, Memorystick, any Sony product....

well, they did say "non-exclusive". I see that as their picking a side, but not above ditching the format the consumers don't want. Remember, Disney also picked Divx (not the codec) as their format of choice... we'll just have to wait and see.

Personally, I will wait until a single format emerges or both formats are supported on a single product (just DVD-/+ R/RWs) are both supported on nearly every DVD recorder out there...

From a backup POV, Blue Ray is obviously prefferable.


There will be terabyte-size HDs soon.

Well, the PS3 is going with Blu-Ray too, and there are already Blu-Ray-based DVRs in Japan I think.
