Probably what throws me off the most is that you can literally buy a movie and watch it over and over for 20.

If all it takes is waiting a bit.... Fuck it?
But, like, hasn't that always been the calculus? Do I spend $30 on tickets and perhaps another $30 on popcorn and sodas to see the movie NOW or do I wait a couple weeks and see it on matinee? Or a few more weeks and see it in the discount theater? Or a few more months and buy it? Or a few weeks after that and see it on a streaming platform? Or several months later still for cable?

$30? No thanks. But I can see how it makes sense for families

That's right, forgot about the Saks and UberEats.

I used the UberEats a lot more when I had 2 platinum cards and got $30 off.

$15 barely covers the fees =/
Some places allow Uber eats pickup to avoid those fees. There also seem to regularly be $10 off or 50% off (up to $15) promos

I recall the AMEX points being...mostly junk overall, and certainly compared to VISA Ultimate Rewards. Is that still true? Still, for just straight up cash, that isn't terrible, but I assume the 1-3 month purchase requirements are really nuts to earn that? I'm not a huge spender as it is....but hey, I might need to make some big one-time home purchases soon, so it might work.

I always liked AMEX no BS customer service and straightening things out with vendors at zero hassle on my end. IME, anyway.

They also have regular Amex statement credits if you spend X dollars at Y vendor. They can be a mixed bag but they seem to be stepping up their game lately. There's a $100 off offer when you spend $100 at Dell. There have been Amazon deals this year too like a $50 off $200 which worked on third party gift cards.

As for the points it depends on what you want to use them for. 100,000 points is $700 at Amazon. They have gift card options up to $1000 but those with the best ratio may or may not be what you want. Transferring points to their travel partners will be worth much more but only if we get back to traveling and those airline partners work for where you want to travel

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that this is in place of a theatrical release. Sure $30 sounds expensive for a "rental" but compared to going to see it in a theater its quite affordable. And if you don't want to spend that much for a single viewing, then wait for it to be released on DVD which also means its free on Disney+.

Let me put it this way, I won't even watch it even if they pay me.

Well, there is also that thing where the actress who does Mulan is a giant fucking piece of shit individual.

I think some people forgot about that.

I think the insulting bit is that it is on top of a subscription service. I'm already paying for the platform. Its not just $30, its $30 plus a D+ sub.

I'm also paying for all the equipment vs a theatre. Just equaling the ticket price isn't a fair trade off.

Personally I think she said that for her financial interests more than actual personal belief but whatever.

Variation of the sunk cost fallacy. If you're already paying for the platform then the $5 is a sunk cost, so the marginal cost of the purchase is actually the cost of the purchase. Saying it really costs $5 fees is just artificially inflating the price. If you haven't purchased the platform then, yes, the marginal cost of the purchase is $35. That's now your two tickets plus maybe a small soda. And you don't get just the movie for that extra $5, you get enough time to binge-watch the Mandalorian or perhaps some other shows.

And saying you have to have a discount versus the theater because you have to pay for the equipment is just an absurd extension of that same logical fallacy.

As @thestrangebrew1 pointed out. This equates roughly to 3 movie tickets. The price is not that absurd. I have to laugh at all the single bachelors on here complaining about the price.

#hailcorporate I guess?

Many people don't have d+ The only way to access it is by paying additional money. How is that sunk cost at all? It's also $6.99, not $5. So we're up to $36.99 for a one time viewing for many.

For current subscribers D+ wasn't billed as a rental platform. It was supposed to be one price for their whole streaming library. This is changing the bargain. What's to stop them from monetizing 'premium' shows on the platform after this? I feels like this is a dangerous precedent.

As for my own equipment, more appropriately I'm not using THEIR equipment I suppose. They don't have to pay for real estate, employees, seats, AV equipment, etc. They are realizing a significant cost savings in delivery of the movie to me by me using my own equipment. I would expect to have some of that savings passed on .

You know what else comes with it?

Generally comfy chairs that recline for watching movies....
An expensive projector system....
and an expensive sound system....

That's part of what you're paying for as well. This doesn't come with that - and it also just completely eliminates the "man in the middle" of dealing with movie theaters and goes straight to Disney.

Then there is a simple fact that the overall concept of a "family" of 5 or so watching a movie together just doesn't represent the average household, but thats what it's being priced under....

Who cares? People with Disney+ are people with kids. And if your kids want to watch this live action Mulan, you're going to pay $30 so they can watch it whether you like it or not.

If you're single and big nerd like many here, then you're not paying to watch Mulan if it's $30 or $0.

This is pretty much where I land. No way I myself would pay $30 to rent the movie, I probably wouldn't have ever subbed for D+. BUT, I got a wife and kid, stepson's gf that are Disney nazi's so I'm kinda screwed. They'll spend the $ whether me and the stepson are there to watch or not so...At least I have a home theater setup we enjoy so that'll be nice.

They should care. Maybe they'll care more when instead adding movies to free streaming they linger at $5 rental, drifting down to $1 rental for years. Holiday movies mysterious disappear from free tier near the actual holiday, etc. Media companies would like nothing more than create a permanent per view structure.

You should care because it won't just be Mulan if this goes well for them. It will be all the star wars and marvel stuff as well.

Definitely agree. I really hope this flops hard. Otherwise we are going to see stupid things like "The simpsons package" etc.

There are a million things to watch on streaming. If your kids have literally watched everything else then tell them to go the fuck outside.

Or have them watch the original, I guarantee it's better.

*glances at his Plex library* Yes... kids... that's why I have all the Disney movies...

Randomly read some news on this release - apparently they took out the song "Make a man out of you" ?

The overall point/irony of the song was that Mulan could be trained just as well as the men - so taking the song out IMO just does the reverse lol.

Anyway, Rotten audience score of 55% tells me that it's probably pretty crappy and I have no urge to see it anytime soon.

Side note - it's hilarious how Rotten Tomatoes has gone down the shitter of what was once a useful website and is now a breadbasket of moronic "critics"

Nothing more hilarious than seeing a shit movie or stand-up comedy get 90%+ from "critics", but get single digits from actual audience.

Due to the main actresses position on Hong Kong and the CCCP I’m gonna pass on this one. I’m sure Lebron will heather his kids around with some popcorn and give it a watch though.

I'm not too surprised by this level of corporate greed. I mean, this is Disney we're talking about... the same place that will charge you $90 a day per person for theme park admission and then charge you $5 for a soda once you get inside.

That's a hard pass for me. I don't have ponyo or brianmanahan money to throw around.

We watched it the other night with my parents. My mom and dad are having there condo remodeled and she wanted to get out for a bit so we invited them over for a pizza and movie night.

The movie was just ok. Decent acting and effects and of course it's a very old story so it goes without saying that the story has stood the test of time. But at the same time it just felt kind of empty or lacking any real emotion. IDK I'm not a movie buff so not sure how to describe it. My 13yo son lost interest after about 45 minutes and left to back to his room but his 14yo friend who was spending the night enjoyed it and watched it with us.

I don't think it's worth $30 maybe $15-20 but overall it wasn't a bad movie but it wasn't great either.....it was just ok. I won't watch it again but I didn't feel like I wasted my time seeing it once.

The crazy part is people will actually pay. Just wait like a year or even less, and you can own it on DVD and it will be cheaper. People tend to be so short sighted when it comes to these type of purchasing decisions.
