okay before you ask, i heard this from my sister's boyfriend and he said he read something about dissolving thermal adhesive. i was wondering if anyone on these forums have actually successfully done this? my as5 is stuck to my zalman 7000 all copper heatstink. i don't know how it is glued maybe it got heated up and decided to stay to it, but i am sure i used AS5 on it. i want to put the chip into a new motherboard so i want to try to dissolve it. thoughts?

I found that using nail polish remover does the job quite well..but use it sparingly...some of the acetone free stuff can damage any plastic components that come in contact with it...but with that said it does work quite well(the stuff with Acetone in it that is)

Ok, people need to learn correct terms here. If you used thermal adhesive/paste, it is not gonna come off without some serious chipping...scraping...freezing. Now if you used thermal GREASE/compound, just run your computer for a bit to get it warm before you try and remove it.

AS5 is not adhesive!!

What you're seeing is surface tension between the two surfaces. (worse at cold)

Like others have suggested, warm up the CPU/HSF interface and gently try and slide it off vs. pull it off.

Now clean the residue off both contact surfaces with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. (don't use Goof Off, gasoline, acetone, Mr. Clean, KY Jelly, or anything else concoction)

Is the thermal compound is hydrophobic, something like isoproponal (ie: rubbing alcohol) should work wonderfully....

but like others said try running ot for a while so it warms up and remval should be straight foreward
