I simply hate Billy's product,it sucks.
I would like to have Apple with OS X but I live in Serbia so there is not such a thing.
Which Operating system is running on your machines?
Are you satisfied with Window$?

Windows is OK IMHO, but I prefer OS X. For games I use Windows. Why do you hate windows?

What is this? Why do we need this? This is unnecessary flamebait material.

I use Linux. Debian specificly.

Your choices are either Linux or Windows.

Usually there are regional versions of Linux aviable for most languages, but I don't know anything about Serbian.

I know that KDE Desktop has Serbian localization features for language support, but I don't know much beyond that.

I'd probably have a look at Debian. It's the most 'universal' Linux distro that I know of, but it's going to be tough going.

There are pretty popular Linux distros for Russia like ASPLinux. And there are Linux versions for other eastern european countries...

But I don't know realy know much of anything about this stuff.

It's pretty much OS X vs Linux vs Windows. That's going to be your choices. If OS X isn't aviable then you only have Linux vs Windows.

I like Windows XP a lot. I like Linux a lot, too. I'd love to try OS X but I can't afford the hardware. I detest HP-UX (I've been using it at work for 4 years, I've earned the right to say so).

To the OP, what is your basis for hating Windows? Are you trolling as bersl2 suggests?

Answer is:because people in Serbia haven't so much money for that,it is too expensive, even for you in US.

SuSe 9.2 Pro is free to download. The missing parts are easily added from online installation.

http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/downloads/ftp/int_mirrors.html

I have the 64-bit version installed on my desktop and the 32-bit version installed on my laptop.

I don't hate MS... i'm actually very satisfied with WinXP, no problems at all. But I do like playing around with Linux sometimes, especially for all the free software and certain programs that are only available on Linux.

Get a job and buy your hardware and software. If you can't then computing is too expensive for you. Find another hobby. Try panhandling.

And Windows isn't too expensive here in the US, at least not for us with jobs.

Honestly, I really don't like using Windows, but I have since 1.0, I've always just been too lazy to learn how to properly use Linux. I have mandrake, redhat, slackware, fedora, debian on my 300gb drive, just not actually installed.

and yet you were not too lazy to install and learn windows.

I run: OpenBSD, Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows XP. I probably even have Solaris on a machine at home.

Windows is much easier by far.

I did my first Unix and Xenix installations/configurations 15 years ago (and first Linux installation 10 years ago) and I still find Linux a hassle to upgrade and configure. I don't have my TV card (PVR250) running yet because it's a chore to find the right packages... packages that actually work.

While I find Linux generally easier than Windows, it's still a PITA compared to something simple.

Windows easier by far? I wouldn't so easily say that.

If you take someone completely computer illiterate (never having touched windows or linux) and do a test comparsion, you might be suprised by the results.

I remember such a test done by a linux's user wife. Latest version of Mandrake (at that time) vs Windows 2000. The wife went through emotional hell installing Windows 2000. (things which might be straight forward to you might not be the same with everyone else). She then install mandrake on her system. From what I read, she was jumping up and down with joy with the ease of the mandrake installation.

I am aware that Windows is designed to work for the lowest common denominator, but just remember how many users call in for tech support because they screwed up their computer. If windows was so easy to use, wouldn't tech support for windows be obsolete?

Your basis of comparison is installing the OS? How many computer illiterate people install their OS on a regular basis? Most of them get a Dell or a HP or whatever, turn it on and click on the blue E.

By the way, I would be interested to see what this person thought of an XP install. You type your name, a key, set the time zone and that's it.

That's exactly the attitude that keeps Linux from being a success as a desktop product. There is no problem. LOL

STaSh: there are Linux distros that are easier to install than Windows, but the problem is that even simple tasks like upgrading the video driver is far more complicated than any normal task under Windows. For example, to install the nvidia driver (the easiest of all modern cards) the user has to do this for SuSE, other distros are similar:
1. exit out of the gui (log in as root and init 3)
2. prepare the system for the driver:
2a. go to the linux source directory and do a make cloneconfig
2b. make prepare-all
3. run the nvidia installer and ignore the errors (did it work? we'll soon see!)
4. modprobe nvidia
5. sax2 -m 0=nvidia
6. go through arcane setup which involves specifying horizontal and vertical frequencies if your monitor isn't listed
7. select the resolutions that your monitor supports
8. test the selections and exit
9. log out as root, log in as your user id and init 5

ATI's set up is even more complex since it involves editing xorg.conf manually. And upgrading the kernel for either breaks the module and requires the steps to be run all over again.

Setting up the PVR250 is much, much more involved.

You forget the inital step.

Partitioning of the hard disk.

Might be a piece of cake for you and I but for others...they would be like....huh???

As for the installation of mandrake, unless you chose expert, it does pretty much everything for you, INCLUDING partitioning.

Fair enough. I could always give my computer illiterate friend a completely automated install of XP. Pop the disk in, go watch TV for 20 minutes, done.

But I hear you on partitioning.
