we just got a new dishwasher in April. KitchenAid. Stainless interior, adjustable top rack and its sooooooo quiet. rated at 51db.

the old POS we replaced couldnt even fit our plates. we had to tip them sideways. And the lime it left was really bad.

Still some lime build up with the new dishwasher. But we have very hard water. We have a brand new water softener sitting in the box waiting to be hooked up.

Use white vinegar in the rinse aid compartment. Trust me... it works.

our watter is bad. we have quarries all around us and a cement plant down the street. Lime is big business in this town.
I lived in a place down the road that had well water. you had to chew through that shit. City water is marginally better.

the old dishwasher didnt have a rinse aid cup. the new one came with a free sample, so weve been using that for now.

My dishwasher isn't plugged in and I have never used it. Dishwashers are too much hassle for a few minutes of work.

Our house originally had an 8 year Maytag piece of shit in it from the previous homeowners. It would leave food particles all over despite cleaning the filter, increasing water heat, rinsing the dishes, etc. To make things worse it was pretty loud.

A few months ago I replaced it with a Kenmore Elite 1392 and we love it. MUCH quieter and cleans the dishes with minimal rinsing required.

Older models operated very simply in a 20-30 minute wash cycle. Models today seem to take 1.5 hours to wash dishes with a heat/dry cycle that wastes money through electricity. Pay attention to the number of gallons of water used during the wash cycle.

This is what I would look for in a dishwasher:
  • manual dial controls instead of electronic
  • simple cycle settings
  • short wash cycle time of 20-30 minutes
  • no heat/dry cycle, or the ability to opt-out of it
  • a food particle filter that is easy to pull out and clean

Consider the possibility of piping the drain outlet into a sink food disposal.

It seems to me that dishwashers made in the early 1990's are superior to the electronic crap made today.

However, you will probably go with the expensive, electronic, stainless steel model with the 1.5 hour wash cycle. My sense of utility does not match other people's need for bling.

There's a local Miele dealer I checked out yesterday, but the entry level model is around $1600 if you include tax and install.

That's too much.

The search continues.....

I have a Bosch that I absolutely love. Gets my dishes crazy clean and you cannot hear it running if you are more than 2 feet away from it and there are no other noises.

Have a GE quietwash 3 or some such. Got it with the house 6 years ago. Run it about once a week and never had a problem. It is probably at least 10 years old.

No, no I don't. It does the job, but it's loud. It will be the FIRST appliance we replace in the kitchen.

This....omg this ^ We still have the original that came w/the house 14 years ago. It's so noisy we run it at night. I dont think the drying option works anymore either. Hell it's almost easier just to handwash everything since there's only the 2 of us. Maybe that's why it's lasted so long 'cause we run it like once a week......:hmm:

Same here. We have a Bosch, gets dishes unbelievably clean and is super quiet.

The one that came with my house crapped out the other day. The repair guy said replacing the pump alone (not the only problem) would be around $300, so it's time to replace.

I've never bought a dishwasher, and looking around the net there are negative and positive user reviews for every brand.

Just looking for some opinions.

I went to the local Sears and the have a Kenmore Elite at a pretty good price.

The Kenmore Elite ones are really nice. We've got one. They're actually made by Bosch. Just rebadged. Does a great cleaning job and you can barely hear it running. Get a stainless steel interior if you can. Doesn't stain when you're washing dishes with pasta sauce, etc. like the white ones do.

^^^

By the time you finish rinsing, and soaking stuck stuff, you could have just washed it properly in the first place.

I have an old GE that came with the house. Never had a problem with it. When it does die or have problems, I'll probably just buy a used one like Zerocool did and save some bucks if I can't fix it myself.

Rinsing and soaking??? are you mad

I don't rinse or soak. I just put it in the dishwasher and it washes it for me.

The Miele dealer actually said they don't want you to rinse dishes before you put them in; something about the grease making it easier for the machine to cleam them. And he said the average lifepan is over 20 years.

But, like I said, $1600 installed for the cheapest model is more than I can get myself to spend for a dishwasher.
