Do you like your dishwasher?

The one that came with my house crapped out the other day. The repair guy said replacing the pump alone (not the only problem) would be around $300, so it's time to replace.

I've never bought a dishwasher, and looking around the net there are negative and positive user reviews for every brand.

Just looking for some opinions.

I went to the local Sears and the have a Kenmore Elite at a pretty good price.

I bought an Admiral which isn't top of the line but it was a $300 washer marked down to $90 because it was dented on two sides that I got from Lowe`s. It cleans dishes awesome.

I liked the Smartwash feature. The one in the store is stainless steel.

my option would be for you to replace the pump yourself. part very well could be less than 100. how old is the dishwasher and whats the model number?

It's a Kenmore Ultra wash that the repair guy estimated at around 12 years old. He said the cost of the pump was $250.

Other issues:

Racks are rusty and getting worse. Some of the tongs have fallen out and other are getting ready to. Estimated replacement cost was around $100.

The electronics are glitchy. The only setting that works consistently is Pots & Pans.

The little hose to the top rack has developed a small hole.

I have an older model of this one and while it does a good job cleaning the dishes, it's pretty noisy. I just start it when I go to bed at night and it isn't a problem.

My parents have a Bosch that's nearly silent and is really nice overall but it wasn't cheap.

I doubt the pump is as expensive as he's saying it is. but anyways I take it you have well water with all the rust issues, if so look into getting a dishwasher with as little metal as possible.

Sounds like the original from 12 years ago was a p.o.s. I have a Jenn-air dishwasher. I like it quite a bit. Main reason for that brand was to match the stove - 5 burner (gas) top; the racks for the top are made out of some miracle material - nothing sticks to them, ever. Instead of a broiler, it has a smaller top oven (electric) for smaller items - a tray of cookies, pizza, etc., and the larger oven area is on the bottom (has convection too.) With electric ovens, I can roast a turkey on an 80 degree day and it doesn't warm the kitchen up because it's so well insulated. Anyway, the dishwasher was merely so that the handle would match. But, I like it anyway. Stainless steel interior because we have hard water and I don't want to worry about it eventually staining, and stainless exterior. Top rack has a separate sprayer.

edit: to KK's post - we went in opposite directions. I got one with MORE metal because of the hard water. If it was plastic, it would be rusty looking within months. All I'd have to do is run out of salt in the water softener for a few days and that would be enough. We can tell if we actually ran out of salt because if we do, we have to replace the shower curtain within a few days.

I'm on city water.

The racks are rusting because the coating is wearing out and exposing the metal underneath. Some of the new dishwashers I looked at have the synthetic racks that eliminate that issue.

I'm glad you made this thread because I'm ready to rant about my $1000 beautiful stainless steel KitchenAid dishwasher.
It worked great for the first year. Absolutely spotless beautiful dishes. After that, it started progressively leaving spots and water stains. Now it's only 2yrs old and the door spring and hinge/latch has totally gave out. I replaced the spring and the latch, but the hinge is still slightly out of place so it won't latch. After doing some reading, it looks like the new stainless model required them to make a special latch that doesn't protrude out to keep the nice sleek look, and they haven't quite got the design right and it's basically IMPOSSIBLE to fix it. And Whirlpool/Kitchenaid does not stand by their products.

The more stuff I read the more I'm shying away from buying an expensive one. I might just go for something cheaper.

$400 dishwasher every 5 years > $1000 dishwasher that starts to decline after a few years

We bought a Kitchenaide-built Kenmore about 8 years ago. It's worked fairly well for us. The original heating element didn't last a year, so they replaced it under warranty...and again in less than 90 days. Apparently there was a batch of this model that came out with a faulty heating element...and they used the same ones for the replacement parts...
Since they replaced the second one however, there have been no problems.
I prefer a dishwasher with the inner stainless steel tub. They just seem to last longer and don't discolor with our hard water.

IIRC, this one was about $800 at the time.

We have a two year old Bosch that I threaten to take a sledge hammer to about twice a month. The SOB stinks to high heaven. It replaced a 22 year old GE that was starting to give us trouble.

There are just two of us and we run the dishwasher about once a week. We are not using the Bosch any different than the GE. Dishes are rinsed, etc. You could open the GE to put in dishes curing the course of the week with no odor problems. The Bosch smells like something died in it.

I really, really, really, really hate this POS!

We bought a Maytag dishwasher, not the top of the line, but pretty high up. When we remodeled our kitchen we made room for it and I installed it myself. We have had it now for a little over 7 years and have had no problems at all with it. I think Maytag and Amana are now owned by Whirlpool, but it is my understanding they are still built the same way and they still have the Maytag name.

We have an 8 year old Maytag that is still going. I installed it Sept 18, 2003 and to date have had only 2 issues. The first was the handle broke a couple years back which cost me about $5 to replace. The second was just recently when it appeared the control panel was going haywire. I opened it up to take a look and there was some type of square module plugged into the control board that had come loose. I plugged it back in and the dishwasher is once again working normally.
