Misnomer. Just laziness on the part of most people.

The Beretta handbook even calls them semiautomatic firearms.

They are, however, pistols also.

Going to change my website page now.

I've got a crappy 9mm I bought for $100.00, it shoots straight but after I fired one box of rounds through it it stopped ejecting the spend casings.

Any gun smiths here???

Not a gunsmith but if its not ejecting spent cartridges (If they are of good quality) its most likely due to a broken extractor or extractor spring assuming the gun is not really dirty.

What kind of weapon is it and when did you clean it last?

Do yourself a big favor and render that thing inoperable before it blows up in your hand. Cheap semi-automatic pistols are awful; they are made with such loose mechanical tolerances that they're just an accident waiting to happen. If it malfunctioned after 100 rounds, it was never safe to shoot in the first place.

Yeah, well it WAS working fairly well BEFORE I took it apart to clean it.....

I may have gotten to togather wrong.

It's not like I'm a noob where fire arms are concerned. I did time in the Marine Corps in the 70's, so I have field stripped my fair share of weapons.

The piece IS kinda weird though. You have to punch out a roll pin just to brake it down!

Just curious. Why are semi automatic handguns called automatic?
IE:
Smith and Wesson 45 ACP
BERETTA .25 CALIBER AUTOMATIC
In addition to ignorance or indifference, there really is no 'absolutely proper' name unless it becomes important in the discussion to distinguish between an automatic and semi-automatic. And even if there were an 'absolutely proper' name, how often do people adhere to the proper title or name of anything?

What the 'auto' or 'automatic' in terms like ".45 auto" are in fact referring to, whether or not the speaker knows it, are the names of the ROUND or the CHAMBER, not the action or firearm, since many pistol rounds have a military heritage and were developed for or became commonly used in auto-loading pistols, machine guns, and subguns.

Well, if you know enough to make an informed decision, its a different matter. Still, you can't buy a decent 9mm semi-auto for anywhere near $100, even if its used. I'd never trust one of those saturday night specials; I honestly am a little leerey of even being around them, especially when they're being discharged (I've known some idiots that thought they were the coolest thing ever.). Have it looked at by a competent gun smith, and definately don't try to shoot it again until you do.

In the same vein, if I did want to purchase a more powerful sidearm to carry (eventually), is there any particular characteristic I should be looking for? Or should I go ask a gun dealer what they recommend and if they would let me try a few different calibers and models?

Orsorum, the .22's will be nice to start with for target shooting. As you improve, you can move to maybe a .223 rifle (that's the round used in the M16) and then maybe that .30-06.

For a sidearm, basically you should at least hold as many pistols as you can and if possible, shoot them too. You will probably find something that just feels "right", like it was made for your hand. For caliber, I like 9mm or .45.

I have one squirt gun. Given me by a former girlfriend and I used to use it on the next door neighbor's dog, which barked all the time. Couldn't leave the house half the time without deafening barking in my ears. The owners and dog moved, thankfully.

Yeah, I can relate to this. A couple years ago I got into it with people in the alt.home.repairs or rec.woodworking newsgroup (can't remember which, but both groups are full of rednecks). There was a guy who proudly displayed his NRA membership credentials in his signature. He was among a whole load of guys who came after me -- on the list, of course! I was saying that all guns should be banned, basically. My argument was that there wouldn't be all these shootings, or at least anywhere's near as many, if guns weren't so damn accessible. I spoke my mind, but I wouldn't get into it in a group like that again. There's just a plethora of people there that are seriously attached to owning firearms. I'm a college radio DJ and like my brother says, I "have a song for everything." My song for this is "Gun" by John Cale.

You got any stats to back up that argument?

Gun runners and gang bangers dont care about gun laws. All gun control does is take the guns out of the hands of law abiting citizens.

Practice with the right weapon.

Old bolt action Remington reworked with the proper scope should do em.

No, it's intuitive. The thing is, anybody who has the idea to get a gun nowadays in the US can get one, unless they are (not eligible and law abiding). John Cale's premise in the song is that once you have a gun, you start to "think like a gun." Owning firearms changes your psychology over time. In England, if I'm not mistaken, you can't just buy a gun. Even the cops don't go around with guns. I see again and again almost every day where cops in the USA shoot people, almost always killing them, very very often when they could have dealt with the situation in a more peaceable manner. I don't think all these cops should be tooling around with these guns on their hips, either. It's real dangerous out there and guns are the biggest reason why. Yes, you can say, if possessing a gun is illegal only outlaws will have guns. But over time, there would be less and less of them until they were relatively rare. It would take a long time, but 50 years down the line, you would find that gunfire would be uncommon compared to today. You wouldn't have to jump every time you hear a loud pop like you do nowadays. Where I live, people are being popped all the time. Not far from where I live, people are just used to the sound of gunfire. It's been that way for many years and it's just been getting worse and worse. It's a very unhealthy situation and the only way I can think of curing it is gun control, and I favor a very stringent form of it.
