I support partial gun control.
people who have been convicted for violent crime should not be able to buy a gun. if caught with a gun in their possession, the penalties should be harsher than for a non-criminal.
background checks to rule out criminals and crazy people should be required, as should a short (3-5 days) waiting period.
the sale of guns at gun shows should be cracked down on, to ensure that they follow the same regulations as all other gun sales.
Your first two point's are valid and I agree with you, but I have to disagree with the last. Gun shows do follow the rules, at least everyone I've been at does and I go to several a year for the last 30 years.
Registration is just a list of gun-owners. If they ever get around to taking peoples guns, won't that list be handy. I will fight registration to my last breath, so don't waste your time trying.
I do think that these new .50 caliber sniper rifles should be controlled and licensed like a machine gun is. There not legal for hunting and I fail to see much potential in them for self protection. It's just a matter of time till some crazy SOB starts killing people with one and that will probably cause a very negative backlash against gun ownership.
As a resposible gun owner, I think we should nip that in the bud before it happens. I still think people should be able to own .50 calibers if they can afford them but a weapon like that needs some control over ownership. If you want to buy one, get ready for an exhaustive background check that the buyer has to pay for (and yearly inspections of that license).
I guess I am willing to make a few small sacrafices in the name of responsibility, but very few and very small.
