Tipping has been on my mind recently. Listened to a freakonomics podcast about tipping last week, then last Fri. my wife & I went to a restaurant a good friend works at. She also happened to be our waitress, so naturally we thought tipping was in order. of course she insisted to not taking the tip, so we just left it on the table. the next night our son stayed the night at her house (they have a boy the same age) & the next day he came home & gave us our tip $ back, saying we left it at the restaurant. we've since talked to her and she played it off laughingly, but we can't help think maybe we've offended her in some way.

Just curious what atoters do in a similar situation?

I have a number of bartender friends, and if I'm getting drinks from them at their work, I tip them. They're performing a professional service. If she was just bringing you food in her home then tipping would be ridiculous, but since she's at work, it should be expected. Her refusal is a little strange, actually...

I always tip extra if a friend is serving me, and they always appreciate it. Odd that she didn't want it.

my roommate is a server and bc of the industry has a lot of server friends, so I know a lot of servers haha

I always tip our friends extra. It gets a little tricky when my roommate serves on us though... especially when shes owes me money ha! So sometimes it varies with her more, but for other servers I know I always tip heavily

You have enough friends that they appear when you go out to a place of business? Must be nice. I know you knew she works there but still.

I always accept refusals because if it goes back and forth anymore it gets awkward.

Like two guys are at stop sign lamely waving the the one who got there second to go ahead. The one who got there second insisting that the guy waving him on goes first because he was there first, but the first guy insisting on being nice because the second guy looks like he barely knows what a stop sign is. Usually I'm the car behind both of them going "just go together ya assholes I can drive around the accident I got places to be.'

Which pretty much sums up my thoughts on why this thread was.... thready worthy to begin with. Its like a lawyer dining in a dinky diner becuse their friend works there and tipping $20 on a $55 tab. As oppose to a normal $8-10

This.

OP is much wealthier but treats his less wealthy friend as an equal, so when he tried to pad the tip she felt bad because she was suddenly reminded she wasn't as wealthy as him. Giving back the tip is an "I don't need anyone's help I'm fine" type attitude, as oppose to being fairly paid for services rendered. She would also probably prefer you not eat there like... all the time... cause thats kinda awkward.

I completely agree. It typically goes like this with me:

1. I offer;
2. They refuse;
3. I confirm the refusal;
4. We all move on with our lives.

Yes. If my friend refuses to accept my tip, then he/she is no longer my friend.

A service is a service, doesn't matter who's giving it. I always tip for service.

Yea this is usually our MO too. Regardless if she was a friend or not, we would've tipped had the service deserved it. But refusing it outright was just kinda weird to us.

Not only do I tip friends, I tip friends generously.

If they were somehow offended, or are Japanese, then I wouldn't.

My friends take care of me, and I take care of them.

The cost of service is included in the price of the drink.

I also don't know any waiters.
