Doberman vs Rottweiler

You'd be better off having just one dog of either breed so that there are no conflicts... and so that you are the only alpha male... either breed will be able to perform the duties you require as long as they are trained properly... I personally love dobermans...

I just want good home security. Our retrievers have always barked and I know that an intruder doesnt know whats on the other side of a door (what type of dog) but just want them for added security (plus I'd like larger dogs in general). Retrievers have generally felt like small dogs to me lately.

Although you claim that you'll be watching your dogs all the time, what if they hurt an innocent person? You'll be in a big pile of sh!t.

They're pretty formidable, you can get your hands on a bigger dogs, these guys are shorter, compact & know no pain. A few centuries of breeding can do that to an animal. Also the white color is a deterrent to humans for some reason.

Do you make sure that all of yours pets are the most hideous breed of their species?

I would be looking at the overall characteristics of each breed, and get the one that more closely fits your lifestyle... I am partial to Rotts, but prefer smaller rather than larger, as they tend to be more athletic in terms of hiking and that type of thing... My dog is most likely a mix rather than purebred, but has alot of the Rottweiler characteristics... She is a great dog, friendly and good with people, but also very protective of where I live when strangers intrude....

Alot has to do with good training, as well as the individual personality of the dog itself...

They -won't- get near an "innocent" person. If I have company over I will put them in another room. If they are so crazy they claw through the door I'll hear it and send the person out of the house.

We don't let our dogs just roam the lawn like some people. These will be indoor so unless some jackass walks up and opens the front door (they'd have it coming) they can't get out.

As far as a gun yeah that would work, but say you kick in someones door and 2 big 125lb+ dogs jump on you, do you have enough time to react, grab your gun, and make two clean shots to both dogs heads? I don't know anyone that could do that while one or the other was mauling you.

BTW I won't be living in an apartment, condo, townhouse or side-by-side home. I'll have a decent amount of property so don't worry about innocent people

I've had a Rottweiler for about 8 years now. He's been a great dog. One thing that I would definitely recommend would be training when you get the dog. He's very smart but he is a little lazy (they're definitely not retrievers, unless he is interested he will not retrieve balls, etc). He is playful though. He always enjoys tugging, finding, running, going on walks, etc. As far as the guard dog aspect, they definitely have an instinct for it. He's never bitten or attacked anyone. He will bark and charge people that he doesn't know if they come running up from downstairs. He definitely lets people know that he's out there. He will bark if anyone is near our house (haha but being a rottweiler he will bark while sleeping sometimes). He's really a great dog. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I trained my rottie in shultzhund and got her Schultzhund I title. If you get any dog i behoove you to get good quality training. Either Schultzhund or AKC (i hate the AKC) training to keep them under control.


One thing i must say. SPEND the extra money and get a dog from a known breeder. This will ensure that there are no inbreeding in the dogs history. its a big problem with polular breeds like rotts, shepards, dobies... Just do your homework.

With that said I am getting a doberman. I like the way they look, they are beautiful and very loyal IF trained correct.

BUT dobermans are in door dogs, they don't like the cold.

Mom and I both have had Rotts and dobies. I liked the Rotts better but they were trained well. Won several obedience classes and did flyball and agility with them. The female Rotts are actually the meaner ones. The problem with Rotts is that they don't know thier size and can hurt people just playing. Mom spend 3 weeks on crutches when the dogs were running and not watching where they were going and blew out her knee. Kids should always be watched when playing around them. Other than that we never had a prob with them.

Piece of advice, NEVER BUY A "BEWARE OF DOG" SIGN!!!, a friend at work got sued to a cool 1/4 million when his neighbor jumped his fence in the dark and got bitten. He sued a year later and the sign was used in court as evidence that the homeowner knew he had a dangerous dog.

That sh!t really pisses me off. How the fvck did that idiot neighbor get 1/4 million dollars for ignoring a "Beware of dog sign"(He was the fvcking neighbor, he HAD to have seen the sign at some point) and getting bit?!

I have a rottweiler, and she's not a bad dog. But it's unlikely that I'll ever get a rottweiler again. She is very affectionate and quite strong, but lazy and stubborn. Not an easy dog to train. Not the smartest dog either. If you get a rottweiler, prepare to spend lots of time convincing a large, strong, stubborn dog to listen to you. She's also not a very good watchdog because she's lazy.

My other dog is a belgian malinois. Think of a medium sized german shepard. She's very attentive and always seems to be on the lookout for strangers. A smart dog and very easy to train. Seems to understand when we want her around, and when we don't. She also has a lightness to her step that makes her seem very athletic. Not a strong dog compared to the rottie though. If I ever consider another dog, a belgian malinois is definitely a contender.

I used to hang around a friend's doberman a lot. Another smart dog that seemed easy to train. Also seemed like an attentive patrol dog. Somehow the doberman always looked a little frail to me though. Always looked to me like their hips would give at the slight push. But if the choice was between a doberman and a rottie, I would go with the doberman because of intelligence, ease of training, and their more attentive nature.

I have a rottweiler now. He's about 6 years old and he's a big baby. He's about 160lbs of muscle. I have never ever heard or see him growl or show any type of anger toward anyone. I used to have dobermans when I was growing up. Had a set of twin girl dobies. Very good dogs too. Personally, I like the rotties.

I beleive there is another breed, a larger breed but we have a smaller one... hes a little over a year old but for his size he can tackle me when playing and easily take me to the ground( 5'11"/175lbs


they are a one family dog, he loves kids but hes very very protective...

they are expensive(850-1200) but are one of the best dogs although hes lazy but i woudlnt ever piss him off.

Another vote for German Shephards. I had 2, both females, that lived to be 13 and 14. Theya re the kindest, and gentlest dogs to those they know. They are also very protective, and extremely fierce when threatened.

One of my dog's attacked a full grown red-nosed pit and sent that dog home pissing on itself.
