Rotweiler= Doberman on steroids.
Rotweilers are big and VERY muscular, I once saw one throwing around a car tire like most dogs do a Frisbee. They can be very good dogs if properly trained, if untrained, or what I would consider improperly trained,....dangerous.
If you want a dog to do more then bark at an intruder,... I hope you have a good lawyer.

bah dogs are not guards. if they bark and the attacker keeps coming, its because he's armed and ur dog is dead.
How can a dead dog bark?

Mom and I both have had Rotts and dobies. I liked the Rotts better but they were trained well. Won several obedience classes and did flyball and agility with them. The female Rotts are actually the meaner ones. The problem with Rotts is that they don't know thier size and can hurt people just playing. Mom spend 3 weeks on crutches when the dogs were running and not watching where they were going and blew out her knee. Kids should always be watched when playing around them. Other than that we never had a prob with them.
Piece of advice, NEVER BUY A "BEWARE OF DOG" SIGN!!!, a friend at work got sued to a cool 1/4 million when his neighbor jumped his fence in the dark and got bitten. He sued a year later and the sign was used in court as evidence that the homeowner knew he had a dangerous dog.

I grew up with a Doberman. I think they are great dogs, especially if they are trained correctly at a young age. Our doberman was a very sweet dog (my parent have a picture of me sleeping on top of our doberman when I was ~3 yrs old). Dobermans are very alert and aware and they always check out strangers when they enter the doberman's territory. Dobermans are also very loyal. Although, our doberman did have a problem with black people (racist dog?). She just didn't like them and always barked at them (she never did attack, but she acted like she was going to).
I plan on getting a doberman when I get a house.

Read up on em and found out that they are smart but not loyal, you can be their master for years but the slightest thing can* make em turn on you.

Ours is that way too, although she came from a neighborhood where they were common so it may be something as simple as being abused by them.

We have a red one and it seems to be a little more temperamental, even moreso then the black one we previously had, if they aren't comfortable around someone
