My older sister and her husband had a rottweiler, it was a very nice dog if you were nice to them/part of the family, but it was 205lbs and even when it played you knew not to let it get too worked up. I was riding my bike past it one time it grabbed the tire (it was playing but still) and shook the bike so hard I fell off, completely bent the rim, its the same as throwing a tennis ball to a normal dog, cept if you throw a tennis ball to a 200lb rottweiler it eats it and craps it out later. Get the rottweiler man, I mean assuming you don't have any kids get the rottweiler even if someone breaks in and shoots it, it will still kill them.

If you are 6'5 275 and bench about 450, nooo problem restraining a 200lb rottweiler, otherwise...taser? Elephant trancs maybe?

For something to guard. Well none other then the Fila Mastiff. Hands down best guard dog. Read a story about how a guy missed a shot on a deer, his FIla jumped out of the blind, chased the deer down, caught it, and dragged it back alive to the blind.

They're are the toughest dogs you'll ever love, and one can kill a dobie or a rott so quick it'll make your head spin. I've had 3, and I have the vet bills from owners of rotts & dobies to back up my claim.

They're smaller, and a whole lot more of a chick magnet. "Oh look, it's Spuds from the beer commercials."

Heh I'm sorry but that thing would fit in bolshevics mouth, I mean maybe if you taught it how to use a shotgun or something and it snuck up on him while he was sleeping...maybe. I'm sure they are very good guard dogs, but its like saying that thing is gonna kill a grisly bear...

point is any dog will bark. all dogs are useless against an intruder that ignores the bark. dogs that bite do not make for good pets unless your a loner.[/quote]

Neg, never had dogs have you? If you are with new people and your dog is trained its ok, but if the dog doesn't know the person or the person seems to be hurting you, god help you even if its a small dog they will give whatever they have (in most cases) Like I said before you could probably shoot the dog, but you're gonna want to have a 12gauge or better, a pistol isn't gonna do it.

Yeah they are great animals, my aunt had one while she was living alone for parts of the year in upstate new york. It was a retired k-9 unit, it was very affectionate and took easily to anyone introduced to it by my aunt, but when I pulled up to the house before being introduced I got back into my car and called my aunt to come out, I wouldn't want to break into that house heh.

Between Doberman and Rot, Doberman all the way. Intelligence and fierceness make up for brawn.

Not to mention they are very loyal.

If you just want a good 'territorial barker' with aggressive tendencies, consider Austrailian Shepards. It has been my experience they are extremly territorial and loyal animals.

But a lingering question on my mind is which breed would you suggest between Doberman (5th smartest breed) and Rottweiler (9th smartest breed)?

Rottweiler read like they pack more muscle and have more weight to them. That true? Would a Rottweiler be a better guard than Doberman?

Its a few factors (friendliness, intelligence and strength) that I'm weighing. I've had retrievers all my life but they couldn't do squat but bark if someone ever broke in.
Well since you want a couple of dogs, then just get one of each I guess? I doubt any Rottie fan would agree, but I have always heard about how dumb the Rotties are, so I would probably choose the Doberman out of those 2 choices.

It's all about the training you five them. My brother-in-law had a rotty that was the kindest, gentlest, best trained dog I've ever seen. But that's because they worked with him since he was a puppy and trained him to be a family dog. However it you train it (or abuse it) to become a mean dog, then they can definitely turn out that way as well.

I've had rottweilers my entire life, so I have experience with about 5-6 of them, all of which were trained well but not exhaustingly.

Of those, all but one were females. The one time we got a male, we also made an amateur mistake and got him from a place we weren't really sure of the breeding quality. He was aggressive, stubborn, and we had to get rid of him eventually after he bit a guest.

BUT: Every single other rottweiler we've had has been loving, gentle around kids, intelligent, helpful, good guard dogs but completely cool around guests (my current one bothers guests by being too friendly). They've all been females, I would suggest getting one or two of those, though it would help if you had a girlfriend/wife around to be the clear alpha female - my dogs used to worship my mom even if they'd still listen to the rest of us. I'd highly recommend rottweilers, but get one from a reputable breeder (or the pound, I suppose) and treat it right.
