I live in the sticks have no other options and am stuck with 28k. My ISP says I can have two accounts if I want. Extra $10 a month. I already have two lines. But will this help! The kids play a lot of games.

what your reffering to is generally called "shotgun". it will double your speed as it is.. it might not be equivelant to a 56k modem but it should be close. you will also be more likely to loose your connection since you have 2 modems, so you have double the chance to be disconnected.

the modems need to be compatible, i remember a while ago the diamond 56ks were compatible with each other and they advertised that. i think some modems can be flashed so that they can be shotgun'ed.

You dont need Diamond Shotgun. Its was an enhancement to multilink PPP which is built into Windows. Its the Multilink tab in DUN. For this to work, you dont use 2 accounts. You have one account that has capability for two chanels. Here is a page that shows how to set it up. Your ISP must support it.

This is what Softcom sent me...

you can sign up with two accounts and multi link into our system if you know how to set it up yourself. We do not provide technical support for multilinking modems. But to answer you questions....it IS possible if you know how to do it.

Ok, but I'm wondering if I will see any real improvement. I've looked all over the net and some say it works great and others say it's a waste of time. Maybe the only way to find out is sign up for a month and give it a shot.

You WILL see approximately doubled transfer rates, but you will NOT see an improvement io latency. If anything, it might even be worse.

Is it worth it? I think so.

I have used Multilink in Win98se and it did allow me to play games that were not playable with one modem at 32,000. Too jerky. Games played just fine with the dual modem setup. I too don't have any other option available for awhile. Although I have found doing some downloads for some reason are no faster with two modems. Don't know why. I am currently switching providers for the dual modem service since the current one could not correct a problem in the account. Best price I have found for dual shotgun(dual modems) is $17.77/month.

Donuts:

Take into consideration that if you want to utilize the Multilink option in Windows it will result in doubling your phone bill. I did this for like a week some years ago with 2 x 33.6 modems, and hardly noticed any difference.

My opinion is that its not worth it.

It does take up 2 phone lines but when I do it at home I connect anywhere from 92 - 95 and download about 8 Kbs. Its wonderfull, and free since I work at the ISP. Its a good alternative for those of us who cant get cable or DSL.

I was using dual 56k multilink for awhile before I went cable, and like others have said here, downloads generally went twice as fast (9-10K/s). Web pages came up noticeably quicker as well but ping times with online games such as Quake 2 did not improve much at all (around 200ms pings). My ISP didn't mind multilink connections and did not charge extra for it either so you might want to check out other ISPs before forking over extra dough just to use a multilink connection.

Oh yeah, the modems I've used was a Diamond Supra Express 56k and a USR Robotics Sportster 56k, both externals. The Diamond touted some kind of Shotgun software to bond modems, but I just used the built-in multilink features of Windows which worked out fine.

So what ISP do work for multilink connections, Ive tried to do it with my ISP and it didnt work and I think it was because they didnt allow two connections at once but im not sure so I want to try another ISP. So can ya guys list a few that do allow you to multilink?

I'd like to know this too..

bump for a good thread!

I still wouldn't be able to download a 128kbps MP3 in real time, but it would still be alot faster.. in worst case scenarios I'd probably have 56k total, but normally I'd probably get 72.. not bad at all!

though I don't have any other modems to add so I can get it working, and I probably have to pay extra..

I've known about this before but I won't be getting this anytime soon (though it's a possibility still)..

Well I technically have dual right now but its not working. I have a shotgun modem and an internet gaming modem. I can either use the two shotgun modems or one of them and my IGM. I have got dual to work a while ago but the isp was pretty crappy. They charged $30 a month and it took several trys to connect the second line. When it did connect speeds were in fact doubled as they should have. I downloaded up to 11k/s on napster, probably faster if I had it longer. I decided to try some other isps but it didn't turn out very well. It turns out that most of the isps around here use the same sprint service. There are others that don't such as the major isps but they suck. So all the isps I tried used the same number, which happened to not work with dual. I could connect at speeds up to 104,000kb/s but it was actually slower than one line. I've talked to many techs about this and none of them can figure it out. They have replaced several routers and things and still can't get it to work. It does work with win2k however, so they say. I am currently using AODinc which was a really good deal. They only charged me $20 a month which I got a static ip with. They are very nice so when they could not get it to work they started charging me $9.50 a month. I still have a static ip and dual access but I only use one line since dual doesn't work. I may try it again once I get win2k but this isp also disconnects randomly a lot. Its not timing out, it actually disconnects randomly. Could be 2 min after connecting, could be 4 hours later in the middle of a game. It is pretty annoying but it doesn't do it very ofton anymore and I connect at 52000 so I deal with it. So I guess i'd have to say dual is good, but its a bitch to get working.

There are other technical issues when using two channels. When you dial in, you will hit one of possibly many RAS (remote access server) boxes in a lineup. These have dial in lines, integral modems (DSP's) and routing capability. The problem is, the 2nd call may land on a DIFFERENT RAS in the lineup. This presents some challenges bonding the two channels across two different RAS boxes. It can be and is done. The provider has to have this "stacking" capability enabled in the RAS servers. If not, you wont be able to get two channels unless both land on the same RAS box.

Donuts, this is not a subject many people have much knowledge on. Even so, I think you have got quite a bit of information on it. What else are you looking for?

I live in Lancaster county PA,the low-tech center of America(I am Mennonite and most of my neighbors are Amish).I'm currently using 2 bonded modems to get 101K access(50.6K X 2). Went the shotgun route 2 years ago. Discovered that Diamond's modems are marginal, their software worse. Now using Midpoint Teamer V3.11 to bond two different modems together. This software is unique in that Multi-linkPPP compatible ISPs are NOT required. I used to use two Netzero accounts(cracked to eliminate the banner)to get free 101K access. Now they are 40hrs/month max so I have to pay $28 for 2 accounts. Previously I have even used 2 different ISPs to get 101K access, lowering my ping in that one will always respond quicker than the other, yielding a faster average ping! So no, you don't have to use Multi-linkPPP ISPs. Get the software from www.midcore.com,use any 2 modems with 2 phone lines and 2 accounts from ANY provider(s) and you've got 101K over common phone lines. Works for me! MarkAtTheZone

Soccerman,
Sympatico allows this if it is available to you and there is no extra charge. Shouldn't be since it is unlimited access. I sometimes have 3 connections at one time - 2 home lines and laptop when away (all with the same ID and password). Never had a problem connecting all 3 at once.

What is Midcore's monthly fee to use their software for modem teaming ? You can't just do a one-time buy with them - you pay a monthly fee.
