Does memory stick = smart media?

I just received my Sony Clie & was thinking about ordering a memory card for it. Only thing is, I'm not sure if I have to buy a Sony brand "memory stick" or if smart media cards will work.

Sony memory sticks are proprietary and not the same as the cheaper SmartMedia cards (or CompactFlash).

I think at Best Buy I saw a Sony memory stick, but from a 3rd party manufacturer, probably tons cheaper than actual Sony product.

I love my $135 Sony Clie PEG-S320 so far, except for I'm having problems when trying to HotSync it with AvantGo using the included USB cable. I keep getting a "connection was lost" error message on the Clie.

The Memory stick is another one of those detailed pieces of engineering, which Sony, Apple et al gets bashed for every now and again because everybody else does it cheaper - and less elegantly. It's merely a piece of memory, but the way that you put it in the unit and take it out again is just one of those little things that confirms that Sony thinks about their products a step further than the rest.

There is a reason why there are Mercedes and Bentleys in this planet, and I could say the same things about Macs.

The thing of course with these items is that you never find out about the nice little things which make your life easier until you own it.
