I just noticed that in the tech specs for the XPS Gen 2, the Dell website mentions that the memory slots are user accessible. I presume this means that installing more memory will NOT void the warranty. I'd better ask to make sure when I order.

Does anyone know for sure about this?

Yes, you can easily upgrade the memory yourself. It does not void the warranty, but installing your own memory means the memory will no longer be covered by the warranty. Theoretically, it also means any other system problems caused by the memory you install are also not covered, but I haven't heard of Dell giving people a hard time about this. Some people suggest keeping your Dell memory rather than selling it, so you can swap in the original factory memory if you ever need to send the machine in for warranty service (to avoid any hassles).

Thanks for that, Manko. Do you know if I need a special type of memory module for laptops, or can I just use regular desktop PC-4200 DDR2 ram? What about other types, such as PC-3200? I read somewhere that the PC-4200 dual channel stuff that Dell is using doesn't make that much of a speed difference over PC-3200, and so some people are just mixing memory types.

Should be buying the system tomorrow, and I doubt I'll be upgrading the RAM for a little while yet, but the info would still be really useful.

Look for Transcend RAM at Newegg, some people over at ChubbyWallet have had luck with them. 1 gig for about <$140 shipped last time I checked. No guarantees from me though.
