The only wasteful thing that bothers me is packaging. I don't know if it's any better in other parts of the world, but here in America, 9 times out of 10, product packaging is excessive and unnecessary.

Yeah, packaging is awful. Just stick that jump drive in a little wax paper baggy or cardboard box... Fucking blister packs.

Some people seem militant about being able to live their lives however they want no matter how wasteful their lifestyle is...I don't get that.
There are people out there (including some on this forum, probably) that would choose a car with higher gas mileage, all else being equal, just to shit on the environment because they can. I'll never understand this type of attitude.

People that waste food in buffets.

Damn you must see a LOT of that! I'm often shocked at how much food people waste on a regualr basis. If I go to a restaurant and can't finish my meal I almost always ask for the leftovers to be boxed up. But I see countless people leaving their tables 1/2 full or more sometimes! D:

Wasteful activities bug the hell out of me. Watching someone stand there with the water running the whole time they did dishes would get on my nerves to. I reuse everything I can, and recycle everything that's collected in my area. Heat is set to 55F, A/C is set to 78F, and I throw out 1 Target shopping bag of trash per week between me and my daughter.

Good for you!

Throwing trash on the ground is one of my biggest pet peeves in this area. Can't tell you how annoyed I feel then I see someone just drop a chocolate bar wrapper, paper cup, or chip bag on the street wherever they are. It's a deliberate fuck you I'm going to do whatever the fuck I want!

Sometimes, but it's more about the cost to me than anything else. I'm currently in an apartment where water is included in rent, so I don't care much about that. Have to pay all other utilities though, so lights are off when they should be and heat isn't up too high.

Actually, something equal with higher gas mileage helps the environment...

I'm with you OP, I hate things that go to waste. I hate disposable junk products too where the device goes out 3 days after warranty and you can't just buy the part to fix it, you have to buy a completely new product.

There's a free commuter shuttle from my company. It picks up 3 blocks from my house, and drops off 1 block from my office. Its got wifi, nice seats, all that fun stuff. I drive anyway. Mostly to spite you hippies. Take that, Hippies!

Oh, and my car is rated at 20/27 which isn't great to begin with, but in practice its usually 16-17.

I use the same dishwashing technique, although I do not dry dishes. Wet dishes are placed on a drying rack. It would be annoying to turn the water on and off for every dish. To those who would suggest washing the dishes at once then placing them aside to be rinsed together I say that I do not like piling my dishes in the sink while they are all soapy. The sink may redirty the dishes. There is also the risk of breakage when piling dishes.

Yea, turning that knob's really tedious... You gotta be careful, or you'll get a repetitive motion injury :^S

I turn my heat/ac up to max and then vary how much I keep my windows open to keep the temp just right. Just isn't as comfortable any other way.

And you work on a cruise ship? lol

Why not get the facts straight!
While everyone looks at the black smoke from the funnels thinking pollution and eco nightmares they need to think beyond the smokescreen of ignorance!

A ship carrying thousands of people safely to a destination is actually efficient. That same number of people ashore are polluting more when you consider all the resources used. From the cars they drive to the waste they generate, energy they use. Ships are actually quite efficient in that regard.

Yes there is a lot of food waste but it isn't entirely wasted. It gets ground up and processed. It becomes fish food and the unsuitable leftovers are either incinerated or stowed for onshore waste facility processing.

There are very strict laws regarding overboard dumping. Liquid waste is processed biologically and its effluent is irradiated with UV-C radiation until its microbial content is far below limits (ORP reading) before discharged. The belief that the "pooper just runs over the side" is simply not true.

The transportation (tankers) industry is the one to watch. They pollute like crazy because they don't have nearly as strict limits on fuel type and emissions.

Cafes that leave water running over their utensils all day long.

Wasted food from buffets as someone has already mentioned.

Excessive packaging.

I'm ok with throwing out old foods in the fridge and I'm not usually a fan of leftovers.

I just meant that it's kind of funny if wasting food at a buffet bothers you it must be kind of hard working on a cruise ship knowing/seeing so much of it go to waste.

But I did wonder what they did with all of it. I know when I cruise I load up my plate with food and eat like 1/4 of it.

Oh, and what's with the "scrambled eggs" in the buffet? They seem anything but eggs to me. Bleh. They are like 50% water D:
