My 9yr old golden retriever suddenly devloped some sort of allergy, probably a food allergy. The vet recommends feeding the dog bison & rice for about 3 months to see if that stops his itching.

Do you guys know of a cheap place to buy bulk 25+ pounds ground bison. The cheapest so far is $5/pound .

How much should I feed a very fit 75 pound indoor dog?

Or do you know of a dog food made for this purpose?

so lamb and rice wouldn't work? Most dogs have no issue with that. Costco's kirkland lamb and rice is one of the best foods and cheapest you can find.

Most food allergies have nothing to do with the type of meat. It has to do with fillers put in the food. Wheat, corn, etc....

A number of dog food companies make Bison dog food like Timberwolf and Solid Gold.

What are you currently feeding your dog? There are also a number of other types of food for allergies - fish and sweet potato, pork, lamb, etc...

So, your vet told you what you should feed the dog, but not how much?
I'd go ahead and call your vet.

If you are serious, get info from your vet on actual dog food made with bison

Bison meat is leaner than beef.

You can probably find places using goggle that sell the meat itself
Most will be in the high plains (CO, NE, WY, ND, SD)

However, you will be paying for steaks not ground chuck.
Contacting those places may provide you with the ability to obtain the left overs pieces as the equivalent to hamburger.

at my local Whole Foods Market and Sunflower Market they sell ground bison by the pound. Occasionally it will be on sale for $3/lb but rarely less than that (I did get it once for a $/1lb and stocked up - love me some bison burgers )

Super-market brand dog foods contain lots of crap that can cause dog allergies. I try finding a pet store that offers premium brand dog foods. A number of them will carry Bison dog good or Holistic allergy-free dog food. You may need to experiment to find one that works for your dog.

That is the problem right there. Both of those food have corn and other worthless fillers.

Solid gold
Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance
Nutro holistic
Costco Kirkland Lamb and Rice

All those foods are high quality food. Don't worry bout the bison part. 99.9% chance it is some crap in the Purina or Iams. They are horrible foods.

How to put a formula to the quality of dog food with example foods.

Bison are much bigger than cows. Transmission size is more likely bulk as far as bison goes. At least being ground it will be much easier to find in transmission sizes since they can mold it that way.
