I'd like to see the kind of PR rap Nike would get for sueing a broke college kid. Why do you people think if Nike actually cared enough to do something about this, that they would immediately take Giga to court? They would probably write him a letter stating their intentions first. Hell, they might even offer to purchase the domain names from him just to avoid all the legal crap they will have to go through. Why would Nike knowingly pay lawyers $10,000 to sue some kid who is broke who cannot pay $10,000. That means nike LOSES $10,000! Lighten up folks, it's not a perfect world we live in. I can't believe all the people who seem to be defending a company who has a sweat shop in asia make a shoe for 2 bucks, they sell it in the states for $100 while paying a sports star millions to advertise that shoe....

I think if Nike paid the $10000, copy cats would start to come out of the woodwork with more nike domains. It's cheaper in the long run just to pay the lawyers to handle the matter.

Exactly. Not only that, but if they get it settled via lawyers and in court, than a precedent is set for future cases, and will discourage future copy cats.

you guys really need to relax about this, no one is calling lawyers, going bankrupt or being sued. he bought a domain, he can buy any domain that is available. its in the freaking constitution about free speech. he hasnt put anti nike stuff on there and who says he was planning to. he simply is a very smart entrepreneur who uses very creative ways to make money. and u all should have thought about this way before. He isnt dumb so just relax. lighten up u guys, an dget back to reality

Man i was ready this whole post, and i just couldn't beleive all the comments people were saying. I totally agree with ya man. Yah he probably will loose his domain name. He "might" get reinbursed for it though. Nike has already a bad rap for those workshops. Now seeing an american that would basically ruin his life for 7 years over domain names? If Giga just doesn't push it to far, i really doubt Nike is going to sue him. IMO

its not even about nike purchasing it, its about the little guy taking a stand against the greedy corporation that condons child slave labor in order to increase profit margins ======F nike, I will not be pushed around I am gonna make the best damn website about something not nike related and nike is just gonna hafta deal with it........

very many people who think they are smart do this...always lose...see the many examples people have shown.

plus, he is admitting he wants quick money. no nike will not (most likely) sue off the bat. they write you a letter. then its theirs. yeah, maybe theyll give you their 8 dollar fee for regging it.

trust me, we arent the only people in the world. its happened, to no avail, so dont go applying to harvard thinking this is your financial backing.

seriously, out up a few pages about the goddess of victory, Nike (Athena Nike)... that way you have a valid reason for having the site in case they dick with you. If their armies of lawyers get involved, it might not help, but who knows?

Wrong. Tell that to the guy that owned crew.com - a nice generic name where he had his site. It was stolen (in court) from him by J. Crew, Inc. He never contacted them to sell it, never listed it, just used it.

Anybody who thinks that Nike would give a damn about the PR in this case is delusional. The vast majority of the public would be on their side, believing that this was some nasty, evil cybersquatter and that they were just protecting themselves.

Wrong. Tell that to the guy that owned crew.com - a nice generic name where he had his site. It was stolen (in court) from him by J. Crew, Inc. He never contacted them to sell it, never listed it, just used it.

I only have one more comment: It's people who DO register domain names with the sole intention of reselling them that make it worse for the general individual who owns domains. If more individual domain owners had crew.com, barcelona.com, etc. happen to them (truly legitimate sites that NEVER should've lost under the letter and spirit of UDRP), there would be much more of a public outcry against WIPO's actions. Right now...the average Joe/Jane Public only sees the cybersquatters...
