Hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), based in San Diego, set sail Jan. 5 for the Indian Ocean area as part of relief efforts following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that recently struck the region.

The Navy has deployed Mercy in an imaginative way, utilizing a creative approach to provide the type and level of care that will be needed to aid the tsunami victims. There is presently an opportunity to configure Mercy with a humanitarian assistance crew - which might be staffed significantly by nongovernmental organizations and people with significant medical capability who can provide relief in other forms.

It will take the 894-foot hospital ship about 30 days to reach the Indian Ocean region. The ship?s 1,000-bed hospital facility will be initially staffed to support 250 patient beds. The number of patient care beds can be expanded up to 1,000 with additional medical staff, if necessary. Equipment and supplies will be available to treat a wide variety of patients from young children to the elderly.

Mercy has 12 operating rooms, but it is likely the focus of care for this mission will be on patients suffering from illness or infections.

About 275 medical and medical support personnel will sail with Mercy to ready the ship for the humanitarian mission. The remaining hospital staff will join the ship later this month. The ship is operated by 64 Navy civilian mariners.

Looking to raise around $25,000 for the Red Cross myself...
If you could visit www.foreheadunfraiser.com it would be appreciated, as the more traffic my auction gets the more likely it is that a company will pledge this $25k.

Thought it was appropos to post this article here:

Buddhists sell temple for tsunami victims
BURNABY, British Columbia -- A small Buddhist congregation has sold one of its temples to raise money for victims of the Asian tsunami.

Abbot Thick Nguyen handed the Canadian Red Cross a check Monday for $405,000, representing the entire proceeds from the sale of the Vietnamese Buddhist Congregation's temple in Mission, east of Vancouver.

The group still has its main temple in the suburbs of Vancouver.

"This is phenomenal," Red Cross spokeswoman Carmen MacKenzie said.

A Vancouver-area Tibetan Buddhist group agreed to purchase the temple in Mission after learning of plans for the sale through news reports.

The temple had been on the market for a year to raise funds for building a bigger temple in Mission. The abbot told the congregation on New Year's Day he had decided to accept the top offer and donate the proceeds to tsunami relief.

"When the abbot made his announcement, a lot of people dropped their jaws, but after a day went by everybody began supporting him wholeheartedly," said Dr. Vi Liet Nguyen, a family physician and temple board member, in an interview in the Vancouver Sun.

The abbot said through an interpreter that the donation to tsunami relief is partly to thank the people of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia who in the 1970s accepted him and others as refugees fleeing from the Communist government in Vietnam.
