I wonder if ATi will lower the price of the x800xt in order to remain attractive. Gives me more options in case Doom3 is unsatisfactory with my Ti4200
Not likely, considering

A. They are having problems in production.
B. It performs solidly above the 6800 U in many other games; infact, in anand's latest tests, it was an even match for the Ultra Extreme.
C. It will likely perform better in HL2. Whether it reaches the 20% mark the 6800 U has in D3 remains to be seen.

HardOCP didn't even do the tests, id did the tests and shared the results with them. I hope a broad selection of platforms is used for official reviews.

This is true. Not all of us have i925x motherboards. I can't wait to see the new socket 939 Nforce 3's rock the house.

Ok, I am one of the morons that bought an X800pro for $400.

Is this Nvidia 6800 GT for real? I haven't seen any newer benchmarks for Far Cry, but the one's for Doom3 say I am an idiot.

Should I sell my x800pro to some poor soul and get a 6800 GT?

Honestly, I'm more excited about HL2 than D3. Of course, there are no benchmarks for HL2, because it isn't out yet.

I'm pretty curious to see how my 6800NU will fare.
On one hand it's pretty clear D3 loves the nV40. On the other, 12 pipes/128MBs.

If it could split the difference between the X800Pro and 6800GT AT 10x7 4x8x (42>60) AND COME IN AT 50FPS I would be a pretty happy camper.

Oh well. these benches confirmed my hunch nVidia would be the company to go with, and disproved my hunch the 5900s would be way above the 9800s. (although 32 vs 26 is a substantial percent, no one will be playing like this, and I'm not a "what would you rather ride?!?! A cow or a goat?!?!?" kind of guy)

;-)

I wouldn't go through the trouble for just one game. Al though I would be afraid what games come after it that will use its Open GL based engine.

We all know nVidia has always done far better with OpenGL games than ATI, & this time, it's even more pronounced.

I hope ATI can improve their drivers for it sooner rather than later, but i wouldn't base a purchase of a video card on one game only. The X800s do very well on many games.

That said, my next purchase will likely be a 6800 GT rather than an ATI card.

The better price/performance card always gets my money.

Remember, this is just one game. You'll know when STALKER, HL2, and other games creep out to stores this year if your hunch was right or wrong, unless Doom3 is the only game that matters to you.

Doom3 is the one that matters most because it is the game coming out at this time. Stalker will matter later this year and the jury's still out as to whether or not HL2 will ever matter....

I seriously doubt that you and other x800pro owners have ANYTHING to worry about. Carmack admits that the benches are far more rigid than real world performance, suggesting that all the cards will be playable with the highest settings. In addition, you have to believe that ATI is going to come through in terms of upping the performance ante for the x800 cards. Even if it means....optimization.

WTF! Who are you going to believe me or your lying eyes.

This is precisely why I won't be doing any upgrading until these new games i.e Doom III and HL2 are on the shelves and the supply has caught up to the demand for these hig-end cards.

THAT's what I am afraid of. If HL2 (ever) comes out, and the 6800 GT murders it, it will be too late for me to switch without losing cash on the deal. I just saw a retail x800pro sell for over $500 on ebay.

I am actually in the process of replacing my VisionTek x800pro for a new one. The VGA connection is too high to actually hook up my monitor, so right now I am actually using the DVI-VGA converter to hook up my monitor. So if I get a sealed x800pro back from VisionTek, that would be the best time to sell it and snag up a 6800 GT.

However, if HL2 benchmarks show the x800pro murdering the 6800 GT, I'd be even more of an idiot if I sold the x800pro and got the 6800 GT.

bamacre, HL2 is based on Direct X and not Open GL. And rumor has it that the ATI cards should perform better in HL2 than Nvidia. But of course, you have not seen HL2 gone gold yet.

Hey General, if the guy who bought your XT for 700 bucks is a Doom Fan, he should be commiting Harey Carey right about now. (not sure how to spell harey carey? LOL)

some of you are idiots - Half Life 2 will be out this year - probably by the end of September.

For those of you worrying that Doom 3 might suck, get your head out of your 4ss - the same can be said for HL2.

You may be right, you may not. But I hope you're not holding your breath for it, that would make you the idiot.

Of course, that's what everyone told us last year, almost a year ago, so pardon me if I'm skeptical.....

sniff? sniff? do I smell Duke Nuke'm 4ever and HL2 vaporware?

As of this afternoon we were playing DOOM 3 on a 1.5GHz Pentium 4 box with a GeForce 4 MX440 video card and having a surprisingly good gaming experience. Even a subtle jump to an AMD 2500+ with a GeForce 3 video card that is two years old will deliver a solid gaming experience that will let you enjoy the game the way id Software designed it to be. That fact alone should let many of you know that you will not be left behind in experiencing DOOM 3.

1.5GHz P4 and a G4MX? Wow. Can't wait to see some benches on the lesser cards.

a sheep . . . Bah

or is it maaah

You MEAN 9800xt - 45.7 vs. 5950 - 43.4 where it counts - 10x7 no aa/af

i am hoping for 10x7 HiQ 2AA/4AF with my (now o/c'd) 9800xt . . .

^^ That can only mean that the game will still have the same look, feel, and playability at lower frame rates. Considering that the 5950 Ultra only managed 43.4 fps at 1024x768 noAA, 8XAF I can't imagine a GF4MX card giving over 25fps or so.

Also figure all the lighting/shadowing/bump-mapping/etc that will be missing on the GF4MX, so card you will probably miss out on a butt load of eye candy.

What I would like to see is how the game performs on a Radeon 9700, 9600 and GeForce4 Ti4600, Ti4200.

He might be. And if he is? I guess he'll have to live with only having the 3rd best card to run this game as opposed to the first. I personally wouldn't pay $55 for what is looking more and more like a solely single player game. By the time all the modders get done with making this a truly viable multiplayer game, it'll probably drop in price a bit.

btw, what happened to your bold statement that the 5900s would crush the 9800s in this game?
