"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
-Stephen Roberts
I love this quote. I am a fellow atheist.

Hmmm, now back to Doom III.

After all the hype got me excited. I tried to find a decent graphics setting. I cannot live, truth be told, with a resolution lower than 1024x768 and I don't think anyone else should be allowed to either. Great performance, hah, by lowering the resolution, what a croc. Who-TF decided that we should go back to 640x480. BTW I tried 800x600, the recommended setting for my video card and it looked like crap.

Settled with 1024x768, noAA/AF 120Hz, Vsync. On Medium settings, I get an average of 40fps, with a high of 60fps and a low of 20fps. These are estimated, just testing in the beginning of the game.

Sometimes it seems unrealistically dark. People have to stop putting those retarded advertising announcements in the workarea, such as in HL and Doom III. Shut up, noone wants to hear it. It feels like a store... KMart wants you to try the new route66. Comfortable, proud etc. Hate that. Back to the darkness - in the bathroom, objects cast a pitch black shadow on other objects under artificial light. That's seems a bit unrealistic. Very little interactivity with environment except for moving light boxes and interacting with the computer which is a nice idea. I wanted to turn on the water in the bathroom or the handdryer, or flush a toilet, but none of that was present, instead they made up this little game that gets boring quickly in the kitchen in the first level.

Phyisics are very nice, the best thing I've seen.

You get to step outside for a bit in the beginning and it looks amazing - such beauty. Another such beauty like this is in the beginning when you land. True cinematic real-time rendering.

****************May contain spoilers**********************************

The gameplay is very nice and the atmosphere makes you take "baby steps". Right from the getgo, you are attacked, you don't start on a nice safe area and then open a door to the horror like some other games. One thing I didn't like is when you get the shotgun for the first time, the platform drops and you get attacked, reminiscent of old style FPS, very undesireable. But the rest was awsome, blowing zombies up and watching them disintegrate.

-Monsters hiding in closets. If I walk past one more corner only to have some imp come up behind me after a magic door opened when I hit a floor trigger I'm gonna take my monitor and throw it across the farkin room. I am 26 years old and have been playing FPS's since the beginning and I completely remember the original Doom being like that but it was -10 years ago-!! We've evolved so much in the FPS genre that it almost insults my intelligence everytime this happens. There's a perfectly good reason why other games stopped doing this. It's fvcking annoying!
Yes, most definitely feel your pain. I will hide in this pitch black area/enclosure and pop up later after the main character passes. They never scare me, just annoy me because of where and how they are placed. Such a slow evolution.

Summary: They left alot of the things from the original series that I thought we had progressed past in the fps genre. Things that were rightfully left behind like searching for keys, monsters popping up behind you out of no where, ammo/health strategically hidden behind things. These are the things that made Doom I/II what it was....but that was a long, long time ago. I'm not tickled w nostalgia everytime I peak into a dark corner and see a health pack, I'm reminded how stupid it is for a health pack to be sitting there (ok, I said I wouldn't rant on this).
True about the health and items. Like why would there be armor, bullets coming out of the airlock in the beginning and then going completely off course to the right. I've gotten used to expect crap to be in unusually unusual places, but I guess I still may have reason to do so.

****************Spoilers ended***************************************

Anyway the game was so much fun that I would have continued to play it for a long time, but I eventually decided to end it after I shot a gas can, while I was trying to shoot this monster dude and died. Yeah, laugh all you want.

Playing this game sort of made me remember of the beginning of Unreal, trying to find a game to compare it with. What game will finally knock Unreal off my top spot? Although Doom III looks great, so far it is still not in the same level as Unreal. Doom III is a great game, but cannot engulf me like the environment and music of Unreal. This is just so far, a 30minute ride into the game. After I finish, we will see.

The game is pretty scary but I only played for like 15 -20 min and I'm already annoyed. Eveything looks the same and I'm running around and can't see ish. I understand the whole atmosphere and it's cool to be scared and all but this is kinda lame. I think I'll be returning the game tomorrow, guess I'm not cut out for this game.

Are you seriously going to be returning the game because you're too scared to play?

No, that's not it. I didn't get hooked in like I hoped I would. I was saying it really isn't that scary. Ok the monsters jump out from different places and it's a nice challenge but I'm just not feeling this game at all. I still need to beat Far Cry, which I actually enjoy playing, from the very first time I loaded it up.

I played Farcry for 3-4 days straight then just stopped playing. The novelty of the huge maps and pretty water faded. Now, if they had more sniper rifle ammo laying around it might get some more play (headshots are always fun) but I don't see why everyone thinks Farcry was the next Half Life. Glad I didn't buy it.

Anyways, if a game is good it doesnt mean another one has to be bad, and vice versa. I haven't played D3 yet, but they seem like completely games.

how is the multiplayer?

and IMHO farcry sucked a$$... it was pretty hyped after it got some good reviews but i thought it was crap when i played....stupid storyline, fake linear gameplay, only good levels were outdoors (indoor ones just sucked), LAME AI...etc

So far I like Doom 3 better than Far Cry. I didn't get that far into Far Cry, but that seemed repetitive to me (though Doom 3 has a bit of repetition as well). In Far Cry it was a cycle of binoculars to find out where enemies are, switch to gun, sneak up on enemies and kill them. In doom 3 it's more like flashlight, then once the enemies scare the hell out of you and you know where they are you whip our your guns. People complain about not being able to hold the flashlight and shoot at the same time... but that's boring. I love it so far... graphics are sweet (IMO better than Far Cry).

I still don't have Doom3 All I can do is read this thread and curse myself for preordering via ebgames. Usually I get games the day of release, but this early release destroyed me.

Oh and I think it goes without saying that if you don't like monsters teleporting in behind you, DO NOT GET DOOM3. That is a freaking classic component of doom. If they decide to make a Doom followup and don't include that, they are doing the fan base a disservice.

All I want is a chainsaw and some nicely placed monster triggers.

GRAPHICS complaints:
We need more polygons, not coneheads. (Just affects it sometimes in the real-time cinematics)
WHO THE F said that AA wasn't needed. (A hype that just died)
The textures are a disapointment even at High Quality. All blurry and pixely some of them are. (Was expecting much sharper textures, maybe an unrealistic expectation)

I totaly agree with these graphic complaints. I'm at 1600x1200 w 2AA/8AF (smooth at silk on my rig BTW ) and maybe I was expecting too much as well, but these graphics are not blowing my socks off at all. Too much stuff looks shiny, rounded and fat/puffy.

Also agree that no flashlight while shooting is lame. I mean I've got two hands, what the hell am I doing with the other when when I've got the pistol out? Playing pocket pool?

No offense, but it is foolish to give back a game, because one, they won't accept it open, and two, because you only played 15 minutes. Do you know how many people disliked the first Silen Hill, because the first 30minutes weren't exciting. They stopped playing and then the missed the rest of one of the coolest games out there that spawn three sequels. Play the entire game, you can't judge it in 30minutes.

On personal note. While playing I would suggest to turn on AA, because of all the specular lighting, that may be the only thing you notice and turn off AF, because it's so dark and you WON'T be paying attention to the floor.

I don't take much stock in regard to people's opinions, because they are just that... opinions. I'm still getting the game and it does look AMAZING.

Proof positive I have ADD...... I couldn't handle Silent Hills because of that first 30 minutes and lost interest in it. Now I've lost disc 2 of the game and can't reinstall it. Same with Morrowind, too much plodding around trying to get a clue as to what I was suppose to do.

The irony of all this is that I think that the whole computer game industry is an untapped resource as an artistic medium. Games should start being rated for artistic as well as intellectual value - which they're not. The more popular games are on the same level of just so many Bruce Willis action films; predictable and boring; the main protagonist is always some muscle bound meat head that's only function is to kill and isn't inclined to wax philosophical on the meaning of his actions, no real thinking involved, and very little intelligent dialogue.

Well, I just spent a ton of money to upgrade my system to handle the latest crop of predictable computer games because at least I'm still interested in the direction of greater graphics sophistication. I haven't bought Doom 3 yet because I'm trying to get done with Far cry (got that damnn valcano in sight so it won't be long...) and I have Painkiller on the back burner. I don't feel like I've got to rush out and buy it after reading this thread - it can wait.

I just hope one day that a game will come out that strives for artistic merrit beyond, "Wow, those 3 headed winged fanged things won't die unless you shot them point blank 3 times with the Double Barrel Super Shot Gun!!".

THe only problem I have with the game is that I am out of ammo too much. I see all of theses lockboxes with ammo in tehm but you need a 3 digit security code to get in and I have no clue where to get those codes. I have rn accross about 10 of these things with no chance of getting in them.

Yes, my opinion also ... I knew about FarCry long before it was finished, sort of "Yeah, another game with some good graphics, let's hope they finish on time and make it a decent game". After all, I never heard of that game nor the company behind. Also the jpeg pics don't make ANY justice to the running game itself.

Then it came out and ... total blast (at least for me)! Until the part the monsters start to jump on you ... damn hard to kill them, and I always prefer to kill human beings lol That's why I like Jagged Alliance games so much ... no bloody monsters or future set! Just plain present human-killing!

The success of FarCry was based around NO HYPE AT ALL!

Ah, I'm felling the need to restart FarCry and do some man-hunting on that tropical set! Take a swim on those incredible waters!

But I'll try D3 too ... I just hope they have a great engine full of potential ... we'll be all winning in a couple of years ...

I am having a blast with this one. Sure I have to play at 8x6 but it doesn't seem to matter to me. I like the fact that you have to toggle between the flashlight and gun. It makes everything so much more frantic.

Was there anyone who did not kill that first tech when you get the gun?

I think everyone that hates the darkness of the game needs to make sure their gamma/brightness is adjusted properly and use the flashlight more - that's what it's there for. Be thankful id didn't make it an item with a limited power supply!

When I play I'm listening closely and going through an area slowly with the flashlight out searching all the dark areas for baddies, places they could be hiding, and a "safe place" I can run to if attacked. Also I try and keep to a wall so I cut down on where I can get attacked from and have less area to search for my attacker.

I don't think id designed Doom3 as a "go in guns a blazin' and kill everything that moves" game. You're a space marine caught in a space station under attack by an unknown enemy. Your first mission is to find that scientist and after (literally) all hell breaks lose your goal is to stay alive. I love the gameplay so far.

I thought Far Cry was ho hum. It was naturally going to be visually ahead because of the evolution of the genre, but the game suffered from the same issues that many games do: poor voice acting and lame plot.

I'm getting further into Doom 3 now; the gameplay is starting to get repetitive and baddies jumping from around corners is getting annoying. I hope there's a change of pace coming.

Great, so it doesn't get any better. First impressions can mean a lot.

Look at the PDA you have (default TAB) you'll have to look through the recent emails you get for that area. Sometimes you'll have to listen to the audio files too.
