You get smoother gameplay. I fixed the issue though (I had simply unpacked one of the files to the wrong dir; all fixed and the fps in the scores didn't change so no worries). But yeah, if you unpack them, you'll get smoother play.

Killrose, how were you able to run Doom III on Win98 SE? I thought it only runs on WinXP/2K! Did you apply a specific mod or what?

Hmmm. Interesting. Write a description on how to do this and I will place it at the top of the thread.

Thugsrook found out that Win98 was not listed in the game dir or something and made up a patch to get around it. I had real problems running the game for about the first 2/3 of it. It would freeze up randomly while loading saved games, durring game play, ect., but the last 1/3 or so of the game I never had anymore problems.

iD probably realised they had a problem too late in the game development to correct it i'm guessing and just decided to write-off Win98 users, seems they corrected it later in the game IMHO.

If I set the texture preference and mimmap detail to high performance I still get 30fps.

Just installed the BFG 6800Gt last night, and, with the following setup in Doom 3, these are the results:

1600x1200, Antialiasing 8X, Anisotropic filtering 8x, image settings "quality", V sync- application controlled. nVidia 6177 drivers

48 FPS...

Read this: http://www.tweakguides.com/Doom3_1.html

And http://www.tweakguides.com/Doom3_10.html has a link to the HUMUS mod. It's a mod created by ATI which speeds up the X800 series about 40%. My X800XT is now faster than a 6800 Ultra. The link goes here: http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14874&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

And I suggest ALL ati users read it and also tweak their game because at the moment Doom is tweaked for the nvidia, but with a few simple commands you can tweak it for ati - so says Mr. C himself in the thread.

update

evidently, the version 3.7 of Rage3D tweak i'm using does'nt recognise running the demo as a game/3d app. I just re-tested and confirmed that by setting the card to 335core/308mem all the time instead of just the "in game utility" overclock setting.

This increased my score from 33.7fps to 37.8fps

So anyone else relying on Rage3d tweak to test the demo benchmark, may want to try it again by locking the card in overclock mode all the time.

That goes for all you hardware sites out there too

9700 pro at stock omega 4.8 drivers. 2.4c at 3.0, kingston hyper x 256 x 2.

Drivers at default settings - application preference.

1024 x 768 high settings - 40 fps ultra high settings 39 fps (second run through for both)

The funny thing is at high settings, watching fraps I rarely dip as low as 40 playing the game and gameplay is very smooth (the odd slight slowdown when heavy fighting starts). Gameplay is smoother than farcry for me, but not as exciting. Ultra high is unplayable - frequent slide show. The demo is not really an indication at all of how the game plays in my experience. I do wonder if I got more ram, if performance would improve?

More ram would certainly not hurt here. But those are pretty good scores for a 9700pro. I will add your benches to the site tonight. Thanks

There was an interesting article I found off hardocp which showed a big difference between using doom 3's in game 8*AF, and forcing it in windows video settings. Basically the in game version only does it when required, this makes a huge difference to performance but none to quality on both Nvidia and Ati cards.
It's also apparently why some people see big differences with the ati shader patch and some don't - those who forced 8*AF see a big difference with the shader patch, and those who use in game settings don't.

Anyway net effect of this is:
a) let doom 3 set AF settings (ati and nvidia).
b) shader patch isn't really worth it if you've done a.

See http://www.techreport.com/etc/...ati-doom3/index.x?pg=1 for details.

yadda I wonder why your benchies are less than mine? You should be killing me unless you have the 128bit version of the 9800pro. Maybe the omega 4.8 drivers have some type of IQ loss involved or something. Or do you have AA or AF enabled?
