If you do that you'll get a black screen with an "out of range" error.

LCDs not at all.
On LCDs upping the refresh rate has absolutely no effect since it's tied to DVI and the response rate.

I think he meant the game refresh rate. Obviously your video card isn't going to sync up to your monitor at a refresh\resolution beyond it's capabilities. So if you're in game FPS is reading higher than your windows refresh rate, you'll get tearing.

I think the majority of posters in this thread are still confused between the three points I mentioned above.

I think I agree with you that the average video forum user:
a) has the mental capacity of a turnip
b) is oblivious to any sort of search feature, or even looking below the top 2 threads
c) extremely defensive about their ignorance
d) incapable of discerning between Software & Video forums

Basically guys the game locks at 60FPS not 60 hz I run my monitor at 1600x1200 and 72hz which is as high as with will go but even with this the max FPS I see is 60 because the FPS are locked not the Hz of your monitor. Just enable vsync and you'll be set no more tearing ect.

wrong JBT, Everytime I launch the game, I use the menu option on the front of my monitor to check the Hz. & ->> fV = 60Hz everytime. And for those of you who can't see a difference... I can't understand that, it's toatlly obvious, especially if you're reading text.

Adding vsync in the game options has helped with the tearing, and also has improved a little with the flickering. Still, I'm still not happy until my monitor says 85hz in the game.

Thanks for all the help. I wish the cfg file would just save the entry I put in it; r_dispalyrefresh "85" it works great, then it doesn't save! Maybe I need to go straight to the source on this issue; id software. I shouldn't have to download Refresh applications just for this. There must be a new cvar in the cfg I can add.

So far so good with doom3, but I wonder if anyone has figured out how to run the game with a higher refresh rate than 60Hz. There's too much tearing going on right now.

Upping your refresh rate will make tearing *worse*. Turn on VSync.

Yup

Well for me with a res of 1600x1200 I push the button on my monitor and it says 72 hz. But anyways like I told you in my first post to do... Right click desktop>proporties>settings tab> advanced>Name of video card (mine says 6800 GT) >Refresh Rate Over ride> Radio button: Over ride refresh rate>

From here you need to change from default and input the refresh rates you want for each specific resolution. This will FORCE refresh rates on resolutions instead of the game choosing them.

If You don't have a Nvidia video card download the program ReForce and it will do the same thing. GL and Hope you get it working correctly.

I've added the line seta r_displayrefresh "85" in the cfg file C:\Program Files\Doom 3\base. When I launched Doom3 it held at 85Hz. Looked 100 times better, however when I exit the game and re-launch it reverts back to 60Hz. Grrr..

I can't stand this dam flicker...The game is dark enough, and flickering, 800x600@60hz and only a ti4400. All of this is taking its toll on my eyes.

I'll edit that cfg everytime I launch if I have to. Just trying to find a way for it to hold 85hz

The game is getting hella good BTW!! I think I have perma goosebumps!

system specs:

Athlon2500
asus ti4400 128mb
asus A7n8x-2.0
1gig mushkin ddr 222 PC3200
IIyama 22" VisionMasterPro513
all clocked at defaults

Make the config file read only.

I'm running the 40.72 drivers from a while back. They have been the most stable and well balnced drivers with this ti4400. I do not have that refresh overide radio button. I'll try updating the drivers.

I did try the read only suggestion. That works, except if I make any weapon changes in the game etc. and exit/re-launch they won't be saved.

Thank you both

Thanks JBT It was as simple as updating the drivers (61.77) and using the "refresh rate override" options. I'll be happy with these new options. I'm glad Nvidia has included these options for gamers. No more nvrefresh and other refresh rate apps.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the game.
