No one can tell you that until the game is finally released, but you will be definately able to play it with your computer, albeit not at its maximum quality setting. You may just need to upgrade the CPU.

Other than your processor you seem to have a pretty powerful system. However, since the last I heard Doom 3 wasn't scheduled to be released until like November of this year, I would hold out on upgrading unless you need more power for other things now. If you upgrade now for a game that is still 8 months away, you will kick yourself because by then you'll be able to get the next level or two up in performance for as much as you'll spend now.

You might need to upgrade that Athlon 1600XP or is that 1.6ghz? I wouldn't upgrade it yet, because according to gamespy.com Doom 3 won't be out till November.

You system is fine... Plenty of power in your processor... Hell, I have a 1.3gig, and I can play UT03/BF1942/C&C:G while listening to music, and leaving an instant messanger on without missing a beat... Your fine.

Your CPU is too slow for your videocard. You could get a lot more out of your machine if you had a faster CPU.

And yes, would definitely say you need a faster CPU for Doom III or even for Unreal 2003 or another modern game.

Ebworld has a release date of October 31st. Typical of iD minding the corpses on that date. Whatever you do make sure you have a 128 Meg card coz D3 can/will have 96 Meg textures at any one time.

Can I burn that large texture on a CD and load it whenever I need to?

iD software recommends overclocking your processor.

I tried the E3 alpha on P4 2.53 with Radeon 9700 Pro and was getting 30 fps at 800x600, mind you!

NONSENSE. It'll be just about as 'demanding' as Unreal II.

Try a 1.5Ghz CPU, a GF3/Radeon 8500/ and 384MB RAM - for "playable" frame rates. IF D-III required MORE, they would be comitting financial SUICIDE - It will also "run" on the newest Mobility (laptop) Radeons.

This we ALREADY know. However, you can believe what you want for your hardware "fantasies" for Doom III.

You wont need a 3ghz/4gb ram machine to run doom3 ok.
The E3 alpha on my rig (see sig), runs at about 40-50fps, with the occasional dip to 20fps. At the default res(800x600).
Even at the alpha stage, it doesnt need that much of a cpu.
I predict that a 1.5ghz cpu, 256mb ram, geforce3/8500 or above, will be fine for 800x600 play at medium details.

Its the shadows and bump mapping thats the performance killer. The textures in the alpha are rubbish. Doom3 relies heavily on the bump mapping capibilites of a video card to get the fancy visuals.

The textures aren't rubbish. They're actually quite good. Doom 3 uses normal mapping, as opposed to bump mapping, to achieve most of what you see. Then there's per-pixel attenuation, specular highlights, and the works. The normal mapping is necessary, because the shadow volumes are calculated on the CPU, and high poly counts would drag it down.

You'll probably need a faster CPU and a faster video card to experienece all of the bells and whistles.

For normal settings you'll still probably need a faster CPU.

Doubtful.

Deja vu.

Carmack has already stated D-III will be GPU - not CPU dependent. And the 9700Pro will be able to do all the 'bells and whistles' - guaranteed (although a faster CPU sure wouldn't hurt).

(everyone else) Don't speculate anything from an ALPHA build of D-III.
