That's crazy! Sheesh. Nice link though, never would have believed someone went to all that work just to have it black.

1) 5 minute exposure at ISO 800
2) 10 minute exposure at ISO 800

(I'd be interested in 15- and 30-minute exposures too but that's probably asking a bit much)

Thanks in advance!

You would be far far better off with a CCD camera from SBIG or some such company. The problem (as I am sure you know ) is noise. Simply put there is no way a general purpose camera will give the quality of a dedicated CCD. I suppose you MIGHT be able to find a way to electrostatically cool the chip in the camera, but I have no idea how you would go about it.

I'd have to agree 100%. CCD imagers from SBIG and others use CCD chips that have specifically been designed for ultra-low noise and very high quantum efficiency (read: sensitivity). Those factors are critical in long exposure astrophotography. A digital camera, no matter how good, will never perform as well simply because it wasn't designed to take exposures lasting hours. In any case, colour CCDs aren't exactly common in the long-exposure astrophotography world...there's a reason why people pay $8K for 3.1MP monochrome CCD imagers like the SBIG ST-10XME (which, by the way, is cooled with a peltier hooked up to a watercooling loop ). Seems kind of obscene when you can easily buy 8MP digital cameras for a fair bit less, but in astrophotography resolution isn't as important as noise and sensitivity. That's not to say you can't use digital cameras for astrophotography...you can, as long as you're not trying to image too "deep."

Bump

Any of you that have the D70, what would you recommend as a starting Compact Flash Card Size.
256, 512 or higher.

I didnt buy the camera yet. A Camera Store in the Area sells it for 1295 Camera and lens but still have to buy memory.
I could also get one of there store kits that they sell on ebay but they cost around 1450$ with 512meg memory and some extra accessories.

I'd get at least a 512mb one. Gf has a D70 and a 1Gb card. Will probably never fill the dam thing but it is nice to have and not that much more really.

Just don't get a really old one that is p!ss poor slow. If your going to get a performance camera you might as well spend more and get a decent CF card.

Ok Since you say get at least 512 and not an old CF card, how can i tell what is old and what is good?

i'm going from my Sony Cybershot which uses Memory Stick, i never used any other type of memory
But i did sell my old Canon Elan II camera and two lenses, just to gather money for the D70

CF cards say on them what speed they write to? like you said 40X.
I heard the D70 can do about 3 continuos shots with regular Compact Flash, which should be sufficiant for me at the moment, and with a fast CF card you can do several shots back to back.

My main goal at the moment would be to buy the camera at 1295$ and get a Memory Card to learn to use the camera and features.
So 512 Card sounds good, what brands or models anyone?

D70 is better-built camera than the 300D, but Canon's CMOS sensor is still better, giving the 300D the edge, IMO.

I have the feeling Canon with either reduce the price of the next-gen 10D to compete better with the D70 or increase the price of the next-gen 300D with a new case to better compete with the D70. I am waiting for either of those cameras. Besides, I have too much $$$ invested in Canon batteries to invest in another brand.

it will take 12 shots in a row on burst mode in large jpeg mode, it will do 4 in raw mode,

any brand of card will be fine, teh scandisk ultra 2s are the fastest and most popular

Has anyone tried the 300D hack that gives you some 10D functionality? I would say that with that hack it would trump the D70.

I'm curious, do you have a link to that hack?
