I like that idea. Sounds like the best way to get the draft through for the fogies that want it.

I wonder if half the people in this thread even read the post by Michael or Ultra Quiet. Bills die die die in committee all the time. Hell, 99% of them die. The committee is there for a reason -- to make sure fluff and action statements like this aren't given the time of day. It can be proposed, but the committee doesn't have to pay it much attention. I thought this whole thing was taught in American government.

Regardless, this thread is wholly pathetic. I can't believe people want to use the draft as a political tool, or as an anti-war message. I also have a hard time believing a draft would be good for the economy of the United States. At any rate we've got a sufficient volunteer force. Believe it or not -- that force is adequate unless an emergency happens. Doing a Civil draft for public help, etc is a fvcking stupid idea. This is the US, and not Italy or Germany. Lets stop with the Hilter Youth ideas. People pay taxes, and they don't need to be "forced" to help others out. If they are so inclined they can donate their time or money. No one should be "forced" to do something like that.

The draft is bad, and I am opposed to it.

HOWEVER, I would have no problem serving in a non-combatant role (might as well put my engineering degree to use). I'm certain my medical conditions would keep me from combat.

...like it's been mentioned before, bills come and go. This one will never pass. Stop worrying....

In other words as long as its not combat you are more than willing to accept a nice cushy government job. Hilarious.

Medical conditions? Dissipate, how many years did you serve in the Armed Forces?

Personally, I support the draft.

Should be an interesting fight though.

Whoever is telling you that a draft is being pushed for is an outright liar or you're making it up. No one is pushing for a draft anywhere. Retention and recruitment are at record or near record levels and there is absolutely no reason to even be contemplating a draft. Sorry.

Not too sure how this fits with record levels of recruitment and retention, but this is an email I got from my cousin a few days ago...

Well, I just found out today that the Marine Corps is taking Retirees back to Active Duty!!!!! I put my name out there and should be contacted by a Mobilization Desk Jockie pretty soon. Yes, I'm excited. I miss the Marine Corps. The billets are for Global Terrorism. Don't know where they are or what they are (probably overseas), but it's Active Duty and that's a good thing. I fit all the pre-requisites, so I should be good to go.... just have to wait and see. Wish me luck!!!!
Greg

Is this normal? (and what's a billet? )

Yes it is. After you leave the service, you are usually considered part of the reserves for several years(depends on your parting deal)

I would gladly enlist for combat if I could do it. My medical conditions, which I don't care to discuss, would keep me from combat.

Throughout history, it's been small steps like this that have been what caused the complete loss of freedom. In Rome, do you think people just woke up one day and found that they no longer had any rights or freedoms? No. It took many many years of slowly eroding their rights with crap like you are proposing. The gov't claims it's all for the good of the state. Once people agree to perfrom military service or civilian services (for those who are unfit to join the military) then they can start forcing us to do other things. Yea, it is a slippery slope and you can call it a fallacy if you want, but history is on my side and shows that what I am saying is true. Do you really think that man has changed in all this time? Do you really think that our leaders wouldn't enslave us all and make us their peasents if they could? Of course they would.

I also find your comments highly offensive since I have NEVER in my life listened to Limbough. It just shows your bias and that you really don't care what I have to say. You are more interested in name calling and finger pointing than debating.

Wow, I can't beleive what I'm reading. When I posted this I get "The Sky is Falling", when XZero posts it is he not in the "Chicken Little" club as well?

"You are more interested in name calling and finger pointing than debating"

Welcome to the "Dave" side XZero.

They won't try and stand behind the rhetoric they spew, they only come after you with garbage. You'll get used to it.

There are always those who enjoy the Military and even combat. It makes since to let those who do volunteer to fight and serve rather than draft those who would not thrive on it and actually might bring down the Moral of those whom they will serve with.

Why not?

Because I dislike the government and I do not feel that serving the government is serving my country. Perhaps I would equate the two if the government ceased infringing on people's freedoms, but that is unlikely to occur anytime soon.

plus my MOS (combat engineer) seems to be in high demand

here is a snippet of a conversation i ahd the other day with some other vets who i regularly get together and tlak smack to each other with

pilot to ground grunt : it takes balls to get shot at in a helicopter!

ground grunt to pilot :it takes bigger balls to get shot at on the ground!

me to both :it takes the biggest cajones in the world to jump in a boat race down the water getting shot at while not being able to shoot back only to climb up a bridge laden with explosives hoping that SOB across the river does not hit the plunger or button and defuse the exlposives...

as for you guys talking about going to canada and such, i say go ahead!

having to babysit a wuss to scared and/or with no will to fight would more than likely get me killed while i cover your worthless %$# anyway! maybe you should emigrate to france or something.

 ....and thanks for serving....

Let neocons risk their life for their neocon war.
Let Wolfowitz, Rumsfield, Cheney, Perle, Bush go to Iraq and drive trucks and fight the insurgents.
