8 and counting. So what?

And for the record, I WAS very excited for Dragon Age, based solely on the fact that it was a BioWare RPG, until I saw the trailer. Whenever I see stupid ass names like "Darkspawn" and yet another travel-to-a-bunch-of-nations-and-convince-them-all-to-fight-a-common-enemy quest I wonder why RPG developers refuse to let the genre move out of its parents' basement.

The graphics were not state of the art, but they were good enough. Well past good enough. The rest of it is what they have to sell me on.

The highly derivative story of Mass Effect didn't bother you? Or KotOR?

BioWare games are always about their characters more than the actual story.

I pointed out your post count because I think it is fair to say that if you contribute more than 10% of a thread's posts about a game you first called incredibly generic, you have to be at least a little riled up about something.

Not so much, no. I found enough enjoyment in them. But I didn't buy either one of them on launch day either.

What a whimsically arbitrary opinion with no basis in fact. It must be nice to be able to see the world through rules you just make up. Try similar tactics at your job next week. See if they take it seriously.

The last good, fully fleshed out, believable characters(actually integral to a plot) I can remember that are black were Alex and Eli Vance from 2004's Half Life 2 and I play plenty of games. That's just how it is with video games, usually a bunch of stereotypes thrown in for the afterthought that is a story.

Without thinking more than 2 seconds I thought of Res Evil 5 where your partner throughout the whole game, Sheva Alomar, is African. Mercenaries 2 also comes to mind. Oh, and GTA4. and GTA:SA. This is a pointless exercise.

Was this a serious post? Did you even read my entire post?

1. I've never played Mercenaries 2.

2. Yes. GTA 4, a Jamaican accented, reggae, pot smoking/dealing black man from the poor side of town with illegal weapons and ends up killing others. What a refreshing non-sterotype. GTA:SA yes, drug dealing, gang-banging black men from the projects. Again not a stereotype at all. GTA is the absolute worst game you could ever bring up for respectable, non stereotypical characters.

3. I played RE5 recently and I honestly cant tell you I remember anything about Sheva besides that her parents died and she works with you. She didn't exactly have all that much of a personality, most of her lines consisting of her being confused, horrified or just talking about objectives and enemies.

I can't believe you mentioned 3 of the 4 worst examples I could think of (Coletrain being the other). Just because they exist doesn't make them a good, non-sterotypical and memorable black character.

I have no idea where you grew up or lived that either a) made you hate black people so much to think the GTA games are fair representations of them or b) have no idea what black people are. You did not mention a single memorable

Virtually no game (or book, or movie) has an original story. They've all been done before, most of them centuries before. What makes a great story is execution, particularly character development and timing. So just stop it with this "X game has a 'derivative' story" bullshit. Pathetic.

So what's the deal with this game? Can anybody give me the low down on the basics of this game and why it's supposed to be so amazing?

Well, it looks to be bioware's first serious RPG since Shadows of Amn, for one.
Check out Giantbomb's preview video, if you're curious. It clocks in at around twenty minutes and the commentators can be brain-hurtingly insipid at times but it does a pretty good job of showing off the gameplay mechanics.

ED: As far as the story being clique, at least its not another goddamn artifact hunt.

Have you played Baldur's Gate 2?

Anyway, if you want actual discussion, try reading the press/review thread. This one is far off the rails. Some people expect Bio to make their fantasy art style photorealistic and/or to reveal all their cool story turns ahead of time.

Hmmm...not sure about that. Kotor was pretty serious.

This

Also, did anybody else notice the Marilyn Manson song at the end of the non-skippable trailer in the char creator?

I found out that you can transfer the characters you created to the full game when it's released. They didn't say how but I imagine you take the files C:\Documents and Settings\<Insert your profile name>\My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age\Pre-release Characters folder, they are even labeled with the name you gave your character.

$5 says to gather your allies you go talk to them, and *then* they send you on an artifact hunt before dude X agrees to help you

In any event, we shall find out in a few days.

Wtf? Are you guys 10 years old?

Who cares about the graphics. Bioware used to make the best role playing games in my view. I'm happy to put up with dated graphics if the gameplay is awesome.
