What is the level of equipment required to take tack sharp pictures like that? In addition, in the dragonfly picture, is that considered to be "a good amount of DOF"?

most likely a DSLR of some kind and a large lens with macro capabilities, the OP said it was a BIG lens on the camera so IMO that rules out the 105 and 60mm macro lenses cause they arnt that big, if his friend has tons of money he could have been useing a 200mm macro but they cost around 1K, my guess woudl be something like the Sigma 70-300 Super Macro 2

He never got back to me to tell me. He lives in Germany so probably sleeping now. He'll email me tomorrow morning my time so I'll let you guys know then. But when he was over here in the states and I saw the camera (I know nothing about them) he said it cost over $1000 (never told me how much over though) and I don't remember if that was for the camera and the lens or what.

well supposidily canon is gonna release a 200D or 400D which will be priced lower then the digital rebel at the biginning of next year

It's a NIKON D100 shot at 105mm focal length (35mm equivalent of 680mm).

I'm surprised so many people around here are willing to lug around a bulky DSLR, since the wondrous pocket sized cameras are the flavour dejour.

I can see a DSLR in my future, but first a quality video camera. I know the bodies are going to drop in price, but the lens are ALWAYS going to cost big bucks.

ehh dude your math is a bit off on that one

the D100 has a 1.5x crop factor so 105 x1.5 = 157.5

may I ask how you are getting 680mm?

and i dont mind takeing my D70 everywhere, i will gladly sacrifice size for better pictures, changable lenses and manual controlls

105mm x 6.48 = 680.4

Digital cameras, however, have different focal lengths because the size of their image sensors vary from digicam to digicam. So, there is a slight discrepency!
