For everyone who has been looking for these for a while, you will have seen the only place to get one was on ebay for $150 which was well over the retail price. The company that manufactured them had stopped selling them last year and people have been making a huge profit off them. The company that makes them has just announced if there are 1000 preorders for the units they will continue producing them. Beginning Monday August 25 at 1pm, they will be taking preorders which will easily be filled by consumers and retailers.

http://www3.csi-msp.com/bbsite/ that is the link for the japanese announcment and here is the translated version:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/urltrurl?tt=url&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww3.csi-msp.com%2Fbbsite%2Fweb%2Fnews%2Fnews75.html&lp=ja_en

The price is unannounced until tomorrow but it will for sure be less than what the ebay people are scamming them for. Again, the preorder page will be available tomorrow.

For what it's worth, I remember reading somewhere that SegaNet will shut down their Dreamcast servers at the end of the year.

A note about the BBAs: the manufacturer is only planning on selling them in Japan, i.e. no foreign preorders due to some export tax issues, and even if they meet the number of preorders (they probably will...), the lead time on any of these is 4 months. So unless they change their minds on exporting or you've got some friends in Japan willing to send to you, good luck.

There's some more info over at Slashdot, just read the comments.

From sega.com
As of August 1, 2002, we are ending our Dreamcast subscription service and opening up SegaNet servers to all online gamers. Dreamcast users will be able to enjoy free unlimited head-to-head online gameplay on SegaNet through the end of 2002. At that time, Sega will shift focus to supporting new online titles for other platforms, and servers for Sega-published Dreamcast games may close down.

I guess I must be nuts then. The broadband adapter has more uses than just getting on the Sega servers anyway. I still enjoy playing games like House of the Dead 2, Rez, and King of Fighters 2000 on my $50 Dreamcast.

You can still use it as a cheap internet appliance, I don't think you need to connect to any sega services just to get online all you need is that one web disc I thnik.

Correct, the DC can surf the internet through a service other than Sega. Hopefully there will be some way to play the games online without SegaNet, we'll see.

It would be a cheap internet applicance if not for the $150 ethernet adapter. Hopefully this company will not be charging that much.

Actually, I don't think most people use the broadband adapter for connectivity. Your game has to specifically support the BBA. I think most people used these for hacking/copying purposes.

If they are only available in Japan.. you could order from PriceJapan and they will buy it for you in Japan and mail it to you.

I used them to buy my projector and had a great experience. I would not hesitate to order from them again.

Just an option

can you hook up 2 or more DCs and play head-to-head with friends at home? seems like you'd need a server if it was possible.

Well, sega.net may be going down but I still need a broadband adapter

If some of you didnt know, you can run linux on the dreamcast and turn it into a full fledged computer

Now it might not be as powerfull as your desktop, but it could be used as an internet computer running chat programs and such
or even for linux games.

If anyone is interested you can download the dreamcast linux cdimage from here

http://www.fivemouse.com/dclinux.html

Its simple burn and boot process.

Now, i'm needing a mouse and keyboard for my dreamcast can anyone helpout with some links? I'd even settle for some kindof pc keyboard/mouse converter plug if they ever made one.

Thanks,

Jamie

Last time I checked, some Best Buys still had DC keyboards sitting on the bottom shelf of their video games section. And of course, there's always fleabay.
