Dress Code

I'm doing an on site interview for a company in the coming days. The dress is business professional. I guess this is standard, but usually IT departments are more casual. The dress code also specifies for guys: no earrings, no facial hair, and hair above collar. Even my high school allowed hair above the collar!

It's not a big deal since I follow all those anyways, but it seems really strict for the "real world."

I've never worked at a place that didn't allow facial hair.
Where I work, ties were required until This year, but this spring corporate went Business Casual, now it's OK to wear a polo shirt even!

I prefer a business-professional dress environment, even for IT (and I'm in IT). Most places allow IT people to wear jeans when needed (like when installing new racks or server or running cable).

That sucks :\ I love the dress code at my job. I regularly rock the t-shirt and jeans, although some days I do dress up and go in with a polo

For the record, I HATE wearing long pants. I want to wear shorts every day, except when snow is higher than my ankles ...

I don't want to say anything negative about the company because, besides that, they seem like a great company to work for.

Well, their HR department needs a few lessons in policy setting and religious discrimination suits.

I was actually thinking that too and why I originally made this topic.

I know Fry's doesn't allow hair beyond the collar for males, but facial hair seems a bit out there.

legoland. kind of. no facial hair with the exception of a neatly trimmed moustache that couldnt extend past the corners of your lips. if you came in with any noticable stubble or if the moustache broke the corner barriers; they had disposable razors in wardrobe that you would have to shave with. if you were a male and had an earring they also had you cover it up with a band-aid.

its been awhile since ive last worked/visited there, but from my understanding this was to keep the impression that we were a nice, neat and tidy utopia sort of society.

Depends on the company. Some are strict as hell and take themselves too seriously, others don't give 2 shits.

My last company had a 'business casual' dress code that wasn't really enforced. People wore jeans, shorts and over-sized, old t-shirts to work and no one cared. The only office where people cared more was my home, head office where most were executives/supervisors who had to look nice. Most followed by example, and some ladies showed T&A with no problem, even with T&A down the hall.

I hate dress codes. I'd wear shorts and an untucked shirt to work everyday if I could.
But, at least my boss doesn't care about facial hair. I sometimes go 3 weeks without shaving just because I can.

Shit...try working for Disney. No piercings, no unnatural hair colors (highlights), no creative stylings, no visible tattoos, no facial hair (unless you're an actor and it's part of your character)...Walt Disney style mustaches are allowed, etc...

...such rules apply for their business/management, artists, IT, maintenance, etc., not just park workers. I mean, I understand the rules applying to people who have face time with the guests, but damn why the hell can't a night shift security guard have a beard?*

*Note: During my time there I noticed that enforcement of the policy isn't always Nurse-Ratched-strict depending on department/position.

I think dress codes are fucking stupid. I have a manager that insists I wear black socks instead of white, yet he can NEVER see my socks. Stupid. As long as you look professionalish whats the big deal? Who cares teh color of socks, the hairstyle or whether or not you have facial hair. Does that affect your job performance?

The place I work at (in the petrochemical industry) restricts facial hair for safety reasons. Facial hair can prevent getting a good seal on a respirator, particularly if you've been knocked unconscious by a gas release, and it's a rescuer trying to fit the mask on your face.

Also, facial hair can increase the severity of a chemical burn by keeping more of the chemical against your skin for a longer time.

This policy applies to everyone at our company, even to the office staff who are never in the plant. The only exception is to some visitors, and only in certain (safe) areas of the site.

Of course there are exceptions for undue hardships and genuine safety hazards; however, those are few and far between.

If companies had to reimburse us for what we have to wear, maybe they would stop bitching so much.

Meh.

I know that this is going to get me flamed, and I realize that I'm at home wearing a Doors t-shirt with holes in it, but in my relatively short professional life, I've seen that there is some correlation in dress and work performance, technical staff aside. The best workers dress right in the middle. The shoddy workers usually don't care enough to even try putting on decent clothes and the people who dress extra nicely are just showing off.

Just my experiences.
